Popup we're unable to reach ankihub due to planned maintenance or an unexpected issue etc won't go away, can i force quit the ankihub part and just sync my personal decks that i made

The popup will not go away even when I am in other apps. I am not currently actively using ankihub I just have it in my decks, but I am currently using anki for my university course and I want to sync the deck I just updated. I am unable to close the Checking… window nor the yellow popup, but I don’t want to risk quitting Anki and losing all the cards I just made. Can I force quit just the AnkiHub part, or override the AnkiHub syncing?

Yes – you can safely get out of this without losing your cards.

Here’s what I recommend, step‑by‑step:

1. Your new cards are already saved

Anki saves your collection automatically every few minutes and on major actions (like adding notes). Even if Anki or AnkiHub is frozen, your newly added cards are almost certainly already written to disk.

So quitting Anki will not normally delete the cards you just made.

2. Force‑quit Anki completely

Since the AnkiHub “Checking…” window is stuck and blocking normal use, the best move is to force‑quit Anki itself:

  • On macOS:
    • Click the Apple menu → Force Quit… → select Anki → Force Quit
    • Or use ⌘ + Option + Esc, select Anki, then Force Quit.

After that, wait a few seconds, then reopen Anki.

3. Disable AnkiHub temporarily so you can sync AnkiWeb

When Anki restarts:

  1. Hold Shift while opening Anki – this disables all add‑ons for that session.
  2. Now click the normal sync button to sync with AnkiWeb.
    • This sync is only between Anki and AnkiWeb; AnkiHub is not involved when add‑ons are disabled.

If you want AnkiHub off for longer than one session:

  1. Go to Tools → Add-ons.
  2. Select AnkiHub.
  3. Click Disable.
  4. Restart Anki.
  5. Sync with AnkiWeb as usual.

You can re‑enable AnkiHub later from the same menu once things are working again.

4. If the AnkiHub popup returns

If, after re‑enabling the add‑on, you still get the “We’re unable to reach AnkiHub…” message:

  • It may be a temporary AnkiHub outage or network issue.
  • You can:
    • Disable AnkiHub again as above and continue using Anki + AnkiWeb only, and
    • Try again later, or
    • Post your Debug Info (from Tools → Add-ons → Select AnkiHub → View Files → Copy Debug Info) here in the topic so the team can investigate.

If you’d like, after you force‑quit and reopen Anki, you can post a screenshot of your deck screen and I can help you double‑check that your new cards are present before you sync.

Quitting does not work; will force-quitting delete the cards I just made?

You can safely force‑quit Anki — that will not delete the cards you just made.

A few key points:

  • Anki autosaves your collection regularly and when you add notes.
  • The data is written to your collection file on disk, not kept only in memory.
  • Force‑quitting may interrupt syncing, but it does not roll back added cards.

To be extra safe on macOS:

  1. Use ⌘ + Option + Esc → Anki → Force Quit.
  2. Reopen Anki.
  3. Check that your new notes are there (e.g., browse using a search like added:1 or look in the deck).
  4. Restart Anki with Shift held down to disable add‑ons for that session, then click the normal sync button to sync with AnkiWeb (no AnkiHub involved).

If after reopening you don’t see the cards where you expect them, let me know which deck you added them to and how long ago, and I can suggest an exact search to confirm they’re present.

okay force quitting worked thank u sm!!!

Hello,

You can force quit Anki without losing anything.

To solve this issue so you can continue using Anki without Ankihub:

  1. Starting Anki in safe mode will temporarily disable all add-ons. To do this, open Anki while holding down the Shift key.
  2. Go to Tools > Add-ons. Click the AnkiHub add-on and disable it.
  3. restart Anki

Nice, glad force‑quitting worked for you!

Since Marcos already explained how to disable AnkiHub so you can keep using Anki, here’s a tiny recap + one extra tip so you’re fully covered:

  1. Start Anki in safe mode

    • Open Anki while holding Shift → all add‑ons (including AnkiHub) are temporarily disabled.
  2. Disable AnkiHub for now

    • Go to Tools → Add‑ons
    • Select AnkiHub → click Disable
    • Restart Anki normally.
  3. Sync your university deck as usual

    • Use the standard sync button to sync with AnkiWeb.
    • This will not involve AnkiHub while the add‑on is disabled.
  4. When you want to use AnkiHub again

    • Go back to Tools → Add‑ons → AnkiHub → Enable, then restart Anki.

If the stuck “unable to reach AnkiHub” popup ever comes back after you re‑enable it, you can just disable the add‑on again and keep studying, and report the issue here with details (Anki version, OS, screenshot).
