This usually happens when Recolor is not applied to the specific note type / template used in the AnKing Step Deck, even though it works on other decks.

Here are the most likely fixes to try:

1. Confirm Recolor is active on that profile

  • Go to Tools → Add-ons → ReColor
  • Make sure it’s Enabled.
  • Click Config and check if there’s anything limiting which decks or note types it affects (some configs allow scoping to certain note types).

If it’s scoped only to certain note types, the AnKing Step Deck note type may not be included.

2. Check the AnKing Step Deck note type

Recolor relies on modifying the card templates. The AnKing Step Deck uses its own custom note type.

  1. Select a card from the AnKing Step Deck.
  2. Click Cards… (top of the browser / editor).
  3. See what the Note type is called (e.g. “AnKing Step Deck V12…”).
  4. If Recolor’s docs/config mention specific note types, make sure this one is included.

If Recolor has an “Apply to all note types / templates” option, enable that and restart Anki.

3. Test with a fresh profile (to rule out conflicts)

This checks if another add-on or styling is interfering:

  1. File → Switch Profile → Add (create a temporary test profile).
  2. Import a small subset of your AnKing Step Deck or a test note with the same note type.
  3. Install only Recolor there.
  4. See if it works on the same card type.
  • If it works in the test profile → likely a conflict with another add-on or custom styling in your main profile.
  • If it still doesn’t work → likely a Recolor + AnKing template incompatibility or config issue.

4. Share details so we can dig deeper

If you’re comfortable, reply in your topic with:

  • A screenshot of Tools → Add-ons → ReColor → Config.
  • The exact note type name shown in the “Cards…” window for the Step Deck card.
  • Whether Recolor styles are visible if you:
    • Create a basic test note in the same profile, in a non‑AnKing deck.
    • Review that card (just to confirm it’s working elsewhere, as you said).

That info will make it much easier to say whether this is:

  • A Recolor config issue,
  • An AnKing Step Deck template quirk, or
  • A conflict with another add-on.

If you’d like, I can also point you to the relevant sections in the AnKing Step Deck wiki that describe its fields/templates so you can compare them with what Recolor expects.

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

I can’t say I’m terribly familiar with the Recolor add-on, unfortunately. I believe it is hosted by https://www.theanking.com/ and so you might reach out over there for assistance with their add-ons and what restrictions or modifications, if any, there may be with using that add-on alongside certain note types

From there, depending on what it is that you are trying to ‘recolor’ you may also consider the AnKing Note Types add-on, which allows easy customization of a number of note type functions related to the AnKing note types, specifically: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/952691989

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

To add to @Brian_BH’s answer, the Recolor add-on is intended for customizing the appearance of Anki’s UI, not the cards themselves.
