Redownloaded Step deck shows 0 cards after deletion/merge

I deleted the Step deck because it had been merged into another deck on my end. Now when I try to re-download the Step deck from AnkiHub, it downloads successfully but shows 0 cards.

I also tried ā€œReset all local changes to a deckā€, but it didn’t resolve the issue.

Could you please advise how I can restore/redownload the deck properly and get the cards back? If there are any recommended steps (e.g., unlinking/relinking the deck, removing local files, or forcing a full re-sync), I’m happy to follow them.

Here are some concrete steps you can try to get the Step deck back and avoid the ā€œ0 cardsā€ issue:

1. Confirm the deck actually contains notes

First, make sure the Step deck on AnkiHub really has cards/notes:

  1. Go to the Step deck page on AnkiHub in your browser.
  2. Check:
    • That the deck is still published and not empty.
    • That it shows a non‑zero note/card count on the AnkiHub web UI.

If the deck itself is empty on AnkiHub (e.g., it was merged and the source deck was cleared), then there’s nothing to download; in that case, you’d need the updated/merged deck instead. If it shows cards online, continue below.

2. Make sure you’re not just seeing 0 due cards

In Anki Desktop:

  1. Click the Step deck.
  2. Look at the deck list on the main screen:
    • If it shows 0 0 0 (new / learn / review) but Browser → search deck:"Step" shows cards, then the deck is fine; you just have no cards due today.
  3. To double‑check:
    • Open the Browser.
    • Search: deck:"Exact Name of Step Deck" and see if any notes appear.

If there are literally no notes in the browser for that deck, continue.

3. Remove the existing local link and resubscribe cleanly

The prior merge may have left the collection in a state where AnkiHub thinks everything is already applied. Try a clean resubscribe:

  1. Unlink/remove the deck subscription:

    • In Anki Desktop, go to:
Tools → AnkiHub → Manage Decks (or similar wording, depending on your version).
    • Find the Step deck subscription.
    • Click to Unlink / Unsubscribe from this deck.
  2. In the Browser:

    • Search for any remnants: deck:"Step" or using parts of the original name.
    • If any empty/placeholder deck remains, consider deleting that deck (making sure it truly has no other cards you care about).
  3. Restart Anki.

  4. Now resubscribe:

    • From AnkiHub web, click Subscribe to the Step deck again.
    • In Anki Desktop, click the AnkiHub sync button and let it pull changes.
    • Check the Browser again for deck:"Step".

4. Force a full AnkiHub re-sync of the deck

If it still shows 0 cards after a clean resubscribe:

  1. In Anki Desktop:
    • Open Tools → AnkiHub → Advanced (or similar) and look for an option like
ā€œReset all local changesā€ (you mentioned you tried this — do it again after unlinking and resubscribing) or ā€œForce full sync for this deckā€ if available.
    • Make sure:
      • You have a full backup of your collection:
File → Export → Anki collection package (*.colpkg) with Include scheduling checked.
  2. After forcing the reset/full sync, run the AnkiHub sync again and recheck the Browser.

If you already used ā€œReset all local changesā€ before unlinking, the order matters; doing it on a fresh resubscribe can behave differently.

5. Check for merged/moved notes instead of ā€œmissingā€ notes

Because you merged this deck into another one before deleting it, AnkiHub may be tracking all those notes as belonging to the other deck now.

In the Browser, try:

  • tag:ankihub (if AnkiHub tags are present), then sort by deck and look for the cards that used to be in Step.
  • Search by a field that’s unique to the Step deck (word from a card, etc.) and see which deck they are currently in.

If you find them in another deck, then:

  • The data is still there; the Step deck on your end is just empty because all notes have been moved/merged to a different deck. In that case, you won’t be able to ā€œrefillā€ Step without first unmerging/restructuring (which may not be supported automatically).

6. If the above fails, please share more details

If none of these steps work, it may require checking this specific deck’s sync state. In that case, please reply with:

  1. A screenshot of:
    • The Anki main window showing the Step deck with counts.
    • The Browser search for deck:"Step" (full deck name).
  2. A link to the exact Step deck on AnkiHub you’re subscribing to.
  3. Whether the cards that used to be in Step now appear in any other deck on your system.

With that info, it’ll be easier to see whether:

  • The Step deck on AnkiHub is effectively empty after a merge, or
  • Your local subscription is out of sync in some edge‑case way.

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

First, I would check and see if there are actually 0 cards present, or if they are simply suspended (which is normal).

You can check the number of cards present by looking at your tags:

From there, if it turns out that they are simply suspended, which is common particularly for large decks, this tutorial can walk you through how to get started: How to Get Started Studying

Give that a shot, let me know how you fare, and we’ll go from there and hopefully we can get you squared away.
