How to re-download the anking step deck

hi all. I am new to anking step decks. I think one of my existing decks I got from reddit had some overlap with anking step decks. this might be why when I downloaded anking step decks the organization of the deck was all messed up and everything just merged with the deck that I already had. I tried to delete everything in my Anki that had overlaps with anking, but now when I sync with ankihub my anking step deck would just show up all empty no matter how many times I tried…how can I re-download the anking step deck while preserving its organization (subdecks and tags, etc.)

I’ll help you fix this issue with re-downloading the AnKing Step deck. Let me search for some relevant information that might help.

Based on your situation, it sounds like you’re experiencing an issue where your AnKing Step Deck is showing up empty after trying to fix an overlap with another deck. Don’t worry - this is actually a common issue that can be fixed!

How to Re-download the AnKing Step Deck

You need to reset your local changes in the AnkiHub add-on. This will restore all the cards from AnkiHub while preserving the organization structure (subdecks and tags). Here’s how:

  1. Go to Browse in your Anki
  2. In the menu bar at the top, click on AnkiHub
  3. Press Reset all local changes
  4. Select the AnKing Step Deck
  5. Click OK

This will restore everything to what AnkiHub has in its database. After doing this, all your cards should reappear with their proper organization intact.

Why This Happened

When you deleted your overlapping decks, Anki still maintained some information about those deleted cards in your local database. When AnkiHub tried to sync, it detected conflicts between what was in your local database and what’s on the AnkiHub server. By resetting local changes, you’re telling AnkiHub to ignore your local database entries and restore everything from the server.

Hello

I would be happy to help.

For better or worse it is fairly common for Anki to install cards within an existing deck. There are a few reasons for this but the short version is that the way Anki recognizes card types involves recognizing if there are similar notes already in your collection.

Thus, if you have a card that is from a shared lineage or uses the same note type as those in the AnKing deck, Anki presumes that you want to park the AnKing deck in the same location. This is pretty commonplace, but not a huge problem

But, even if it does this it’s quite easy to move the cards out. Happy to walk you through how to do that. Typically takes about a minute or so

Separate from that, when you delete and try to reinstall decks it’s somewhat prone to cause the AnkiHub add-on to get a bit confused, and this can cause syncing hangups which it sounds like you’re currently experiencing. There are a few workarounds, and it can sometimes vary in just how much work we might have to do to fully reset it, but we’ll start with the likeliest initial step to the solution which is this: Resetting Local Changes

Alternately, and for future reference, you can also just move cards over. In the majority of cases, this will be substantially easier (and likely save a lot of time). This tutorial can walk you through how to do that: How to move AnKing cards to their own deck

Give that a shot, let me know how you fare, and we’ll go from there.

hi thank you so much for the suggestions. I tried resetting local changes but it did not help unfortunately. my decks remained the same. I even created a second Anki account without any prior decks or cards and tried to download AnkiHub decks on that account, which didn’t help, either…anything else I can try?

Hello,

When you tried with a brand new account, did you encounter any error messages? Or what exactly happened?

Could you please share a screenshot of your Anki main screen and also of this path:
AnkiHub > Deck Management > Click on the AnKing Step Deck

Additionally, open the Browse window and check if you can find these relevant tags. If you see them, please click on the tag #AK_Step1_v12 and take a full screenshot of your screen.

With this information, I believe we’ll be able to figure out the issue!

hiii yea for sure please see the attached screenshots. I dont think there is any error message when I open my Anki using the brand new account…it is just that the step deck wouldn’t load any actual cards. thank you!!

please see my reply below! thank you!!

From what I can see of the images you’ve shared, it appears that everything has loaded normally:

You have all the appropriate tags, and many thousand cards present.

Everything I can see looks very normal, though happy to help if there are any specific issues you’re having.

It may be worth noting that it appears, from the image you’ve shared, that many of your cards are suspended. This is also normal, particularly with large decks.

It looks like you have all the appropriate tags. The deck doesn’t come with subdecks by default, though you can make them if you like.

I’ve included here some tutorials that may help you get started:

It looks like everything has loaded normally and correctly, and I can’t see any problems from what you’ve shared. But, please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

yay the cards showed up! but in my cards all the onlinemeded pictures just show up as an error icon. is that normal? do I need a separate onlinemeded subscription to be able to see those pictures?

Hello,

On Anki’s main screen, go to AnkiHub and check if it says that media is “Idle” — this means the media download is complete. The media can take a while to download.

If it does say “Idle” and you’re still experiencing the issue, try resetting local changes by following this guide:

Let me know if this resolves the problem!
