Tags Disappeared

Hi,

My school-specific tags disappeared. I have them selected in AnkiHub and when I re-sync they do not repopulate. Please help!

A few things to check and try:

1. Confirm where the tags should come from

School‑specific tags usually come from:

  • The shared AnkiHub deck (if the maintainer added them), or
  • Your own local tags you added in Anki (which AnkiHub does not sync).

If those tags were only local in your Anki collection, AnkiHub cannot restore them after they’re removed. In that case, you’d need a backup of your Anki collection from before they disappeared.

2. Make sure you’re synced correctly

Do this sequence:

  1. In Anki (desktop), go to Tools → Add-ons → AnkiHub → Config and confirm:
    • You’re logged into the correct AnkiHub account.
    • You’re subscribed to the correct deck.
  2. In Anki, run AnkiHub → Force Full Sync from AnkiHub (wording may vary slightly).
This forces Anki to pull all tags, fields, and notes from AnkiHub again.

After the sync finishes, check the Browser:

  • Select the deck, then check the Tags pane on the left.
  • See if your school‑specific tags appear there or on any card.

3. Check whether the tags still exist on AnkiHub

  1. Go to the deck’s page on AnkiHub (web).
  2. Open a few cards that should have your school tags and see:
    • Do those tags show up on AnkiHub?
      • Yes → It’s likely a sync/Anki display issue.
      • No → The tags may have been removed from the shared deck.

If they’re missing on AnkiHub itself, they can only be restored by:

  • The deck maintainer re‑adding them, or
  • You re‑creating them locally (and possibly proposing changes if the deck is community‑editable).

4. Check Anki’s tag display

In the Anki Browser:

  • Make sure you’re not filtering by a search that hides those cards.
  • Try tag:* in the search bar to see all tagged cards.
  • Check if the tags may have been renamed/merged accidentally.

If you can, please reply with:

  • Which deck you’re using (e.g., “AnKing Overhaul…” or another deck).
  • Whether those tags currently show up on the deck’s AnkiHub web page.
  • If you have a recent Anki backup from before this happened.

With that info I can give more specific steps, including how to restore tags from a backup if needed.

The same thing happened to me today. Have you figure out how to fix it yet?

Hello,

Please follow this tutorial to resolve the issue: How to Reset Local Changes to an Optional Tag Group

If you get an error after the first step, just ignore it and do the following:
On your Anki main window, go to AnkiHub > Sync with AnkiHub, and wait for the sync to finish.

Then go to the Browse window and tell me what you see under the tag AnkiHub_Optional.
