Unable to start anki without disabling ankihub add-on

Hi, it was working fine until anki-hub add-on updated yesterday. Since restarting the app after the update, anki just stops responding during the automatic sync when opened and I have to force quit.
iā€™m unable to get an error report because i canā€™t click on anything when its happening.
The only way I can open anki is holding down shift which disables anki-hub.
Iā€™ve tried deleting the add-on and re-downloading it but this hasnā€™t helped.

I am on an older mac (catalina 10.15.7) and so have to run an older version of anki (10.13.4) and am unable to update so iā€™m praying this isnā€™t the issue.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Hello,

What version of Anki are you running? You shared 10.13.4 but to the best of my knowledge thatā€™s not an Anki version that was released.

Can you click here and show me what your resulting screen looks like?

sorry copied the information from the dowload page.

it looks like itā€™s Version āØ24.06.3 (d678e393)ā©

Just to make sure: you mentioned that youā€™re on an older version of Anki but 24.06.03 appears to be the most current version released just a couple/few months ago. Can you confirm for me which version of Anki youā€™re currently running? Just so weā€™re on the same page

Alternately: youā€™re not receiving any kind of error message; just a freezing/timing out?

I assumed it was an older version of anki as i downloaded the one for my older OS but this is copied from the about anki:
Anki 24.06.3 (d678e393)
Python 3.9.18 Qt 5.14.2 PyQt 5.14.1
Platform: macOS-10.15.7-x86_64-i386-64bit

Iā€™m not getting any error message just not progressing with sync and then the app says not responding and I have to force quit

Just to isolate the cause of the issue, can you disable all add-ons except AnkiHub and try again?

Anki-hub is the only add on I have

Hi iā€™m still experiencing this issue. Does anybody have any ideas on how I can fix it?

Can you disable the AnkiHub add-on and see if it fixes the issue?

Hi yes as mentioned originally disabling ankihub is the only way i can open anki so i am confident it is an issue with the AnkiHub upgrade

Can you try this:

  1. Open Anki with AnkiHub disabled.
  2. Log out of AnkiWeb from Tools > Preferences > Syncing.
  3. Also disable automatic sync from the preferences.
  4. Restart Anki and see if that makes a difference with AnkiHub.

That has stopped it from crashing at startup but it still crashes when either syncing to ankihub or logging back into ankiweb (which triggers an auto sync to ankihub)

OK. If you go to AnkiHub > Config, set the Auto Sync option to Never, I assume itā€™ll stop crashing when syncing with AnkiWeb? Does it crash when using AnkiHub > Sync with AnkiHub instead?

yes it still crashes when i sync with ankihub

Does Ankiā€™s Qt6 version work for you? You can get it here: Anki - powerful, intelligent flashcards

I havenā€™t tried but i cannot update my mac os above Catalina 10.15.7 so I donā€™t think i can switch from Qt5

According to the Anki website, recent releases support 10.13.4 or later. That shouldnā€™t impact being able to use Qt5 or Qt6, to my knowledge.

Their website says Qt5 is for 10.13.4 or later?
The two options for Qt6 are for either macos11+ or macos12+

I tried anyway and i canā€™t open it. error: ā€œYou have macOS 10.15.7. The application requires macOS 11.0 or later.ā€

I will go back to Qt5 which is what i was using

ā€œRecent Anki releases require a Mac running macOS 10.13.4 or later.ā€

This is surely version-dependent to some degree, but there are multiple releases available under ā€˜change notes and older releasesā€™ that will support older versions.

It may be that there are other solutions, though running an older version of Mac OS may necessitate finding some middle ground. I believe 10.13.4 was released 6+ years ago now.

Abdo is far more expert in these things than I; hopefully he will have some sage wisdom to impart.
