Hi there! I understand you want to revert to using J, K, L, and ; keys for answering cards in Anki instead of the 1-4 keys. This is likely related to a custom keyboard shortcut add-on you were using before reinstalling Anki.

Solution

To get back to using J, K, L, and ; for answering cards, you’ll need to install the “Custom Keyboard Shortcuts” add-on. Here’s how:

  1. Open Anki
  2. Go to Tools → Add-ons
  3. Click Get Add-ons…
  4. Enter the code: 538879081
  5. Restart Anki after installation

Once installed, you can customize the keyboard shortcuts through the add-on configuration:

  1. Select the add-on in the add-ons list
  2. Click Config
  3. Set your preferred keys (J, K, L, for the answer buttons

Alternatively, if you were using the AnKing Overhaul add-on previously, you might want to reinstall that as well, as it includes custom keyboard shortcuts as part of its features.

The default Anki shortcuts use 1-4 for rating cards as mentioned in the Anki manual, but add-ons allow you to customize this behavior to your preference.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you need any further assistance with this.

it says that code is not valid for my version of anki

I’ll help you find the correct add-on for your version of Anki to restore your J, K, L, ; keyboard shortcuts.

I understand you’re having trouble with the Custom Keyboard Shortcuts add-on code (538879081) not working with your version of Anki. This is a common issue when add-ons haven’t been updated for newer Anki versions.

Alternative Solutions

  1. Try the AnKing Overhaul add-on: This comprehensive add-on includes customizable keyboard shortcuts and works with newer Anki versions.

  2. Look for an updated version:

    • Visit the AnkiWeb add-ons page and search for “keyboard shortcuts” to find alternatives compatible with your version
  3. Use another compatible keyboard shortcut add-on:

    • “Advanced Review Bottom Bar” add-on might help
    • “Review Hotkeys” could be an alternative
  4. Temporary workaround using built-in Anki features:

    • While not J, K, L, ;, you can still use the default 1-4 keys or Spacebar for “Good”
    • Check Anki → Preferences to see if there are any keyboard options there

Troubleshooting

If you want to try a specific approach, please let me know:

  1. Which version of Anki you’re running
  2. If you previously used AnKing Overhaul add-on or just the standalone keyboard shortcuts add-on

Would you like me to provide more detailed instructions for any of these options?

how do i check which version of Anki im running

Hello,

In Anki’s main window, go to Tools > Preferences > Review. From there, you can change it.

in the past i was able to do both 1-4 and J-;

how do i get both?

You probably had an add-on for this, but I’m not sure which one. Let’s try this:

  1. Copy this code: 24411424
  2. Go to: Tools > Add-ons > Get Add-ons
  3. Paste the code and click “OK”
  4. Restart Anki after that.

Let me know if this solves your problem

i tried doing your quick fix and it did not work… also my keys on the screen are no longer red, yellow, green, and blue. is that normal?

Ah nevermind… the quick fix did work. My question about the colors remains… THANK YOU!

Do you mean the color of the buttons?

They’re this color by default—maybe you had an add-on before that changed their appearance?

There is this add-on that helps with that: The KING of Button Add-ons
