Thank you for your question about the changing new card count in Anki. This can indeed be confusing!

Why Your New Card Count Changes

The fluctuation in your new card count (from 1000 to 1169) is likely due to how Anki handles siblings and cloze deletions:

  1. Siblings: When you have multiple cards generated from a single note (like cloze deletions), Anki counts each of these as separate cards.

  2. Card vs Note Count: As explained in this FAQ topic:

This just has to do with the difference between what “note” versus “card” means in Anki. There are roughly 28,800 notes in the deck, but the number 35,000 refers to the number of cards in the deck.

  3. Daily Changes: If you’re creating new notes or modifying existing ones that generate multiple cards (like adding more cloze deletions), this will increase your total card count.

How to Check Your Actual Card Count

To see an accurate count of your cards:

  1. Go to the Browse screen in Anki
  2. On the left side, select the deck you want to check
  3. The status bar at the bottom will show you the number of cards displayed

You can also:

  • Filter by “New” cards to see specifically how many new cards remain
  • Look at both the card count and note count to understand the difference

Daily Limits vs. Total Cards

It’s important to understand that the daily new card limit (set in deck options) only controls how many new cards are introduced each day, not the total number of cards in your deck. Your total card count may continue to increase if you’re adding new content.

If you need more clarification or have other questions about managing your cards in AnkiHub, please let me know!

Hello,

It looks like the bot answered your question perfectly! The difference you’re seeing is mainly because of sibling cards. You can see the total count of new cards by following the bot’s instructions. Your Anki should also show your new card count followed by a plus icon (+) and the number of buried siblings on the deck screen.

Let me know if you need help with anything else!

Hello! What I’m confused about is I understand the new cards + the grey cards (siblings/buried?) but at the end of the day, I check my total cards remaining (I do is:new in the browse menu) and it’ll say I have 1000 cards left. Cool! Then, I get on today and do the same command now it says I have 1169 new cards when I do that command.

Is it that, when I finish a new card, it generates 2-3 MORE new cards that are siblings/clozes? If so, I’d just like to know how to see my total amount of cards including siblings/clozes so that I can plan my total anki/per day accordingly.

Its just frustrating because I get on and see that I have new cards that have been generated because its throwing off how I’m calculating my new cards per day.

@MarcosZan

I understand blue = new, grey = sibling/cloze(?), but why do both of these values increase each day instead of, just the blue value or just the grey value? I just want to know my TOTAL cards including all siblings and clozes.

First, let’s talk about searching in the browser. When you do that, all new cards will be included in the search results, regardless of whether they are suspended or are buried siblings.

Try using this search term from now on: (deck:AnKing-MCAT::Behavioral is:new) -is:suspended

The new cards that appear in that search will remain the same until you unsuspend more cards or start reviewing them.

You can also check this setting. Go to AnkiHub > Deck Management. The option shown in the image should be checked if you don’t want unwanted new cards to appear.

Let me know if this helps!
