Adding a "Hint" Field to AnkiDeck and Keeping it Protected from Updates

Hello, iā€™m wanting to create a ā€œhintā€ field in the anking deck that doesnā€™t disappear with the updates. I know how to create the field and I know how to protect the field on one card, and I know how to protect premade fields on ankihub, but I donā€™t know how to protect a field I create for all cards on ankihub. I searched for similar topics on the website, but I didnā€™t find any related ot my topic. I included pictures of things I know to do and the web link the article I used. Thanks!

Hello,

The short version is that you canā€™t, or shouldnā€™t, edit the fields of a note type for cards in an existing Ankihub deck. Because the note types, and information that define them, are held on Ankihub modifying something like a field will create compatibility issues between your local collection and the collection as it is hosted on Ankihub. Some edits are fine, and totally compatible (changing font style, or size, etc.). Others will create conflicts (changing the number of fields, for example).

You can use any sort of note type you like for cards in your personal collection that are outside the Ankihub deck, though thatā€™s about the limit.

That being said, you can include hints within a given note type by adding them to a cloze, like so:

The {{c1::Earth::planet}} is 3rd from the Sun.

This creates a card with the hint attached to the cloze deletion, like so:

(the top sentence is without the hint added, and the bottom sentence is with the hint added).

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if thereā€™s anything else I can help with.
