How do i add a protected field to add personal notes. the deck i am using has only text and extra fields

I added another field in the note type, called personal notes, but that seems to hinder with syncing with ankihub. many times syncing with ankihub just resets the note and i have lost a lot of my personal notes this way. I saw a pervious post asking a similar question, but it didn’t have a solution. Please guide.

Hello,

You can protect an existing field but, as you have found, it’s not really feasible to edit the note types to include extra fields as this is likely to create issues with Ankihub.

In most cases you won’t be able to add a field to a note, though you can protect existing fields in a note. Is there a particular note type you’re working with that you’d like help with?

yes i am working with mangomedic cloze note type. it only has text and extra fields. I cannot protect them as that might hamper updates. That’s why i added another field, but that has created another issue. Is the only way to contact the creator and ask the person to add a field?

Just so I’m on the same page, which deck are you working with? I’ll see if I can take a look.

At least one of the MangoMedic note types I know to have various fields already; lecture notes, missed questions, etc.

Unfortunately, contacting the creator won’t do much; there is no way currently for an existing deck to modify existing note types, once created, server side. Once the note types are uploaded and hosted they’re fixed unless the author were to choose to re-upload the deck anew.

From what I recall, the MangoMedic note type used in the MangoMedic deck, though, uses the Anking template and has a good number of fields. Though if you can point me to the deck you’re using I would be happy to take a look.

That is correct, mangomedic deck does have a few cards that use the anking card type. but a majority of the cards are of cloze type, which only has 2 fields.

Looking through, I see that the deck seems to be comprised of multiple note types, including multiple different cloze-deletion note types, as well as some basic front-and-back and such.

Unfortunately, if that’s how the deck owner has uploaded it then those note types are fairly fixed, I’m sorry to say.

As you’ve experienced, you can edit them locally but once Ankihub sees a discrepancy it’s likely either to revert and/or cause an error. There aren’t really any workarounds at current aside from the deck owner re-uploading the deck.

Being able to edit the existing note types of a live deck is something that has been discussed in the past, though the constraints lie primarily on the developer side and my understanding is that it’s been on a wishlist for future build-out for some time, alongside other (more immediate) goals. Even then, the ability to do so would likely lie with the deck owner, rather than individual users, but that’s a bit of conjecture on my end.

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

MangoMedic here.

My deck does have a few cards of Anking note type but majority of 26,000+ cards are either simple cloze, basic or image occlusion cards.

This issue of note type has been pointed out to me by multiple users of the deck and I would be happy to rectify it from my end if there is a way possible. Even if I have to re-upload the deck.

Do you think there is a way I can somehow update the deck without losing all the current subscribers?

To my knowledge there is not currently a way to edit existing note types in an Ankihub deck without reuploading the deck entirely.

As noted above, the ability to do so as a feature has been suggested, and considered, though to the best of my knowledge is not slated for near-term development.

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

Thank you for replying.

Maybe I will just have re-upload the deck and send an email to current subscribers regarding the same

That would certainly do the trick.
