You’re right: at the moment, the AnkiHub AI chatbot is only enabled for AnkiHub‑connected decks (typically official/shared AnkiHub decks), which is why you’re only seeing it in the bottom‑right when you’re in those decks.

For purely local, custom‑made decks that are not connected to AnkiHub, there is currently no way for users to turn on the chatbot themselves. The FAQ threads and the tutorial you’re seeing (like “What is AnkiHub AI?” and “How to Use the AnkiHub AI Chatbot”) describe how it works where it is available, but they don’t list a setting to attach it to arbitrary local decks.

Right now your options are basically:

  1. Use it with decks that are on AnkiHub

    • For decks that are already AnkiHub decks (e.g. community/shared decks), you’ll see the chatbot icon automatically when:
      • You have the AnkiHub add‑on installed and logged in, and
      • You have AnkiHub Premium (AI is a premium feature).
  2. If you want AI for your own content

    • The current documented behavior (see “How was AnkiHub AI trained?”) is that the AI uses notes from the deck it is enabled in.
    • There isn’t a public, documented way yet to:
      • Turn one of your private custom decks into an AI‑enabled deck locally, or
      • Upload your custom deck as a private “AnkiHub deck” that the chatbot can then use.

If/when AnkiHub adds support for AI on user‑created decks, it will likely be announced in the AnkiHub Premium FAQ section.

What I recommend you do next

Because your use case (AI on custom cards) is exactly the type of feedback the team is looking for, I’d suggest:

  • Leaving this topic open as a feature request / question so staff can confirm current limitations and potentially mark it as a feature idea.
  • If you want, you can also cross‑post in the AnkiHub Premium FAQ thread (“I have a suggestion for the AI features, where can I post it?” points back here), but this topic is already in the right place.

If the team later introduces a way to enable the chatbot for your own decks, they’ll usually update the docs or reply here with the exact steps. For now, though, it’s not something you can manually add to arbitrary custom decks.
