Anking Step Deck cards in "default" deck? Also no "instructions" subhead

I downloaded the STEP deck and see the cards in the main deck. However it added 5 cards to the ā€œdefaultā€ deck. I looked at those in the browser, and they are all I/O cards, so I’m assuming it’s just examples of them? But it’s really weird that thats there and nothing else to me. Also in YouTube video/images I’ve seen an ā€œinstructionsā€ subdeck in the STEP deck, but I don’t have that. I added screenshots of the main page and cards. Is this how its all supposed to look?

I’m also including an image of the missing ā€œinstructionsā€ subdeck that I found online:

You’re seeing two separate (but normal) things:

1. Why did 5 cards go into the ā€œDefaultā€ deck?

Those 5 cards are ā€œexample / templateā€ cards that come with some AnKing note types (like I/O or image-occlusion-style cards). They sometimes end up in Anki’s built‑in Default deck instead of the main Step deck when:

  • The example notes were created without a deck specified, or
  • Your Anki was still using ā€œDefaultā€ as the deck when the note types were added.

They’re safe to keep or move:

  1. In the Browser, filter for those 5 cards (e.g., search by note type or tag if they share one).
  2. Select all → Change Deck… → move them into a deck like AnKing Step Deck::Extras or just suspend them if you only want them as references:
    • Right‑click → Suspend (or press Ctrl+J / Cmd+J).

This has no effect on your AnkiHub sync for the main deck; it just cleans up your deck list.

2. Missing ā€œInstructionsā€ subdeck

The older screenshots / videos you saw are likely from a prior version of the Step deck or from a manual AnkiWeb import where the creator bundled written instructions inside an ::Instructions subdeck.

With AnkiHub and the current AnKing Step Deck:

So it’s expected that you don’t see an Instructions subdeck anymore when you subscribe via AnkiHub. Your screenshots (main deck + some I/O example cards) sound consistent with the current setup.

3. Quick sanity check

To confirm everything is as intended, you can verify:

  • In the Browser, search deck:"AnKing Step Deck*" and make sure:
    • You see a large number of cards with the usual Step tags (e.g., AnKing Step Deck::AnKing Overhaul::Step 1::...).
  • In AnkiHub Add‑on → Manage Subscriptions, confirm you’re subscribed to the official:
    • āļø AnKing Step Deck (V12) deck.

If these look right, your setup is normal.

If you’d like, reply with:

  • A screenshot of your deck tree showing the Step deck + Default deck, and
  • One of the 5 ā€œDefaultā€ cards open in the Browser (showing its note type + tags),

and I can tell you exactly what each of those example cards is for and whether I’d move/suspend them.

Hello,

I would be happy to help!

I can’t say that I’ve seen this issue before. You should have both the AnKing Step deck and the instructions subdeck. Try deleting everything, and then, if Anki still keeps the default deck, just add a random card to it. After that, resubscribe to the deck and download it again. This might be an issue with how Anki handles the default deck when no other decks exist.

Please let me know how it goes!
