You don’t need macOS 13 specifically for AnkiHub itself, but you do need a version of Anki that both:

  1. Supports your current macOS version, and
  2. Is compatible with the AnkiHub add-on.

Because I can’t see your exact macOS version from here, here’s what you should do:

  1. Check your macOS version

    • Click the Apple logo  → About This Mac → note the exact version (e.g. 10.13, 10.15, 11, 12, etc.).

  2. Find a compatible Anki version

    • Go to the official Anki download page:
      https://apps.ankiweb.net
    • Scroll down to the “Older versions / macOS compatibility” section.
    • Download the latest Anki version that works with your macOS version.

  3. Check AnkiHub add-on compatibility

    • Once Anki is installed, install the AnkiHub add-on using the code from the AnkiHub website.
    • If you get an error (e.g. about Qt / Python being too old), that usually means your macOS is so old that only very old Anki versions work, and those may no longer support the AnkiHub add-on properly.

  4. If your macOS is very old (e.g. ≤10.13 High Sierra)

    • In that case, you may be limited to Anki versions that are too old for AnkiHub.
    • If you can’t upgrade macOS further, the realistic options are:

  1. Go to the official Anki download page:

  2. Under macOS, download the current stable Anki for Intel/Apple Silicon (not an old/legacy build).
  3. Install it normally (drag Anki to Applications, then open it).

macOS 12 should work fine with the latest stable Anki, which is what we want for best compatibility with the AnkiHub add-on.

:two: Install the AnkiHub add-on

  1. In Anki, go to Tools → Add-ons → Get Add-ons…

:two: Try opening Anki and note what happens

From Applications, double‑click Anki. Then tell me:

  • Do you see nothing at all, no window, no message?

    • “Anki.app is damaged and can’t be opened”, or

:three: Bypass macOS security (if it’s a security warning)

If the message is about Apple not being able to check the app:

If nothing at all happens when you open Anki (no icon bouncing, no error, no window), it’s usually one of these:

:one: Make sure macOS isn’t blocking it silently

  1. Click the Apple logo  → System Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down and look for anything mentioning Anki (e.g. “Anki was blocked from use”).
  4. If you see it, click “Open Anyway” and try opening Anki again from Applications.

:two: Try opening Anki from Terminal (to see hidden errors)

  1. Open Terminal (Applications → Utilities → Terminal).

  2. Paste this line and press Enter:

    /Applications/Anki.app/Contents/MacOS/anki

  3. Tell me what shows up in the Terminal:

    • Any error messages / text,
    • Or if it just hangs with no output.

You can copy‑paste the text here or attach a screenshot (blur anything personal if needed).

:three: Confirm which Anki file you downloaded

So Anki is crashing immediately when it tries to start.

On macOS 12 this usually means something went wrong with the install or that a Qt6 build is unhappy on your system. The official recommendation in cases like this is often to try the Qt5 build of Anki instead.

:one: Remove the current Anki

  1. Go to Applications.
  2. Drag Anki to the Trash.
  3. Empty the Trash (optional but recommended).

:two: Install the Qt5 build for macOS

  1. Go to the official download page:
    :backhand_index_pointing_right: https://apps.ankiweb.net
  2. Scroll down to “Other Downloads” or “Mac Intel (Qt5)” (wording may vary).
  3. Download the macOS Qt5 build (it will usually have qt5 in the filename, e.g. anki-2.1.xx-mac-intel-qt5.dmg).
  4. Open the .dmg and drag Anki into Applications.
  5. From Applications, try opening Anki again.

Those numbers (25, 26, etc.) are just the Anki version numbers – they don’t tell us whether it’s the Qt5 or Qt6 build.

On the Anki download page, please look for the exact filename in your Downloads folder and tell me which of these it’s closest to:

  • anki-2.1.**xx**-mac-qt6.dmg → Qt6 build
  • anki-2.1.**xx**-mac-qt5.dmg → Qt5 build

What I’d like you to do now:

  1. Open Finder → Downloads.
  2. Click once on the Anki file and press Space or ⌘+I to see the full name.
  3. Copy or type the full filename here (for example: anki-2.1.65-mac-qt5.dmg).

Then I can confirm if you’ve got the right (Qt5) one or tell you exactly which one to download and link you to the correct section on the page.

You’re still on the GitHub releases page, but the problem earlier was that the Anki app you installed was broken/missing files. To keep things simple and avoid these issues, let’s not use GitHub at all.

Please follow these steps exactly:

:one: Delete the current Anki

  1. Open Applications.
  2. Drag Anki to the Trash.
  3. Empty the Trash.

:two: Download the correct Anki directly from the official site

  1. Go to:
    :backhand_index_pointing_right: https://apps.ankiweb.net
  2. Under macOS, click the main download button (the normal macOS build, not GitHub).
  3. Wait for the .dmg to fully finish downloading.

You don’t need to pick a version like “25.02” etc. on GitHub for now—just use the main macOS download from that page.

:three: Install from the .dmg

  1. Double‑click the downloaded .dmg.
  2. A small window will open – drag the “Anki” icon into “Applications”.
  3. Eject the Anki disk image (right‑click → Eject).
  4. Open Applications → Anki and try to launch it.

If nothing happens or you get an error:

  1. Open Terminal and run:

    /Applications/Anki.app/Contents/MacOS/anki
