Hi saradt,

I understand you’re trying to install the AnKing Step deck but are running into compatibility issues with your older Mac running Catalina 10.15.7 and Anki 2.1.35.

Compatibility Information

According to the information in our documentation, the AnkiHub add-on (which is required for accessing the AnKing Step deck) requires a newer version of Anki than what you’re currently using. The latest recommended version is Anki 24.04.1, as mentioned in our Getting Started guide.

Unfortunately, Anki 2.1.35 is too old to support the current AnkiHub add-on.

Potential Solutions

  1. Check if a newer Anki version supports Catalina: While you mentioned you cannot upgrade your Mac, some newer versions of Anki might still be compatible with macOS Catalina. You could try installing Anki version 2.1.49 or 2.1.50, which might work with both Catalina and the AnkiHub add-on.

  2. Older AnkiHub versions: You might want to check if there are older versions of the AnkiHub add-on that would be compatible with Anki 2.1.35, though this is less likely to be supported.

  3. Alternative (non-AnkiHub) version: The AnKing team previously released their decks in non-AnkiHub formats before moving to the AnkiHub platform. You might be able to find an older version (V11 or earlier) of the AnKing Step deck that doesn’t require AnkiHub.

Next Steps

I’d recommend:

  1. First trying to install the newest version of Anki that will run on macOS Catalina
  2. If that doesn’t work, reaching out to the AnKing team directly via their YouTube channel or website to ask about alternatives for older systems

Would you like me to help you find specific information about which Anki versions might work with your macOS version?

I can not seem to find the 2.1.50 version, downloadable for mac. Could you please refer me to a link where I could possibly download this.

In the meantime I have also purchased the mobile app and am trying to synchronize the anking deck with the app, however I am having some trouble synchronizing here as well.

I’ll help you find Anki 2.1.50 for Mac and provide guidance on the synchronization issues you’re experiencing.

Hi saradt,

I understand your frustration with trying to use the AnKing Step deck on your older Mac. Let me help with both of your issues:

Finding Older Anki Versions for Mac

For older Anki versions, you’ll want to visit the Anki legacy downloads page. You can find Anki 2.1.50 and other older versions at:
https://apps.ankiweb.net/downloads/archive/

Specifically, for your Mac running Catalina (10.15.7), look for versions like 2.1.49 or 2.1.54, which should be compatible with both your OS and AnkiHub. From that page, you can download the appropriate .dmg file for your Mac.

Mobile App Synchronization Issues

For synchronizing the AnKing deck with the AnkiMobile app, there are a few things to check:

  1. AnkiWeb vs. AnkiHub: These are separate systems. AnkiHub is for collaborative decks (like AnKing), while AnkiWeb handles synchronization between devices.

  2. Synchronization Process:

    • First, make sure you’ve properly set up an AnkiWeb account
    • On your desktop Anki, sync to AnkiWeb (using the sync button)
    • On AnkiMobile, use the same AnkiWeb account to sync
  3. Email Confirmation: If you’re seeing an error about email confirmation, you’ll need to log in to AnkiWeb.net to confirm your email address.

Alternative Option

If you continue having compatibility issues, you can download the older version (V11) of the AnKing Step deck which doesn’t require AnkiHub. According to our FAQ, the V11 deck is still available through their Reddit post.

Would you like more specific instructions for any of these steps?

I have succeeded to download the anki 2.1.49 version. However, when I try step 3) signing into ankihub via the anki app on my mac. I do not see a ‘third party services’ option under preferences. How should I proceed to sign into ankihub on my mac?

Hi saradt,

Great job downloading Anki 2.1.49! Unfortunately, I think you may have encountered a compatibility issue. The “Third Party Services” option in preferences is likely missing because Anki 2.1.49 is still too old to properly support the current AnkiHub add-on.

Compatibility Issue

According to our Getting Started guide, the currently recommended Anki version for using AnkiHub is 24.04.1. The AnkiHub add-on may not be compatible with Anki 2.1.49, which explains why you’re not seeing the login option.

Your Options

  1. Try version 2.1.54-2.1.60: These might be the oldest versions that could potentially work with AnkiHub while still being compatible with macOS Catalina. They’re available on the Anki archive downloads page.

  2. Use AnKing V11 (without AnkiHub): As mentioned earlier, you can download the older V11 version of the AnKing Step deck directly from their Reddit post. This version doesn’t require AnkiHub and should work with your setup.

  3. AnkiMobile option: Since you mentioned purchasing AnkiMobile, you could focus on using that platform instead. You would need to:

    • Download the V11 deck on your computer
    • Sync with AnkiWeb (not AnkiHub)
    • Then sync AnkiMobile with your AnkiWeb account

Next Steps

I recommend trying option #2 (downloading V11) as it’s likely the path of least resistance given your Mac’s constraints. Once you have the V11 deck downloaded, you can sync it to AnkiWeb and then to your AnkiMobile app.

Would you like specific instructions on how to download and install the V11 deck?

Yes i would like specific instructions on how to download V11. The syncing option is not working on my ipad even though that is uploaded to the newest version

I’ll help you download the AnKing V11 deck and set it up on your devices.

Downloading AnKing V11 and Setting Up AnkiMobile

Hi saradt,

I understand you’re having issues with both downloading the AnKing V11 deck and syncing with your iPad. Let me provide specific instructions for both:

How to Download AnKing V11 Deck

  1. Access the Reddit link: Visit this Reddit post where the AnKing team has shared the V11 deck.

  2. Download the deck file: Look for a link to download an .apkg file (AnkiPackage) - it should be prominently featured in the post.

  3. Import to Anki 2.1.49:

    • Save the .apkg file to your computer
    • Open Anki 2.1.49
    • Click on “File” → “Import”
    • Select the downloaded .apkg file
    • Follow the prompts to complete the import
  4. Sync with AnkiWeb:

    • After importing, click the sync button (the circular arrows in the top right)
    • When asked, choose “Upload to AnkiWeb” to push your deck to the cloud

Troubleshooting iPad Sync Issues

If your iPad sync isn’t working, try these steps:

  1. Verify AnkiWeb account:

    • Make sure you’re using the same AnkiWeb account on both devices
    • Visit ankiweb.net and confirm your email is verified
  2. Check internet connection on both devices

  3. Restart AnkiMobile on your iPad

  4. Force a full sync:

    • On your computer, go to Tools → Preferences → Network
    • Click “Force full sync” and then sync
    • When prompted, select “Upload to AnkiWeb”
    • Then on your iPad, open AnkiMobile and sync
  5. Check for AnkiWeb confirmation errors:

    • If you see a message about email confirmation, visit ankiweb.net and log in

Important Notes

  • Remember that AnkiWeb (for syncing) is completely separate from AnkiHub
  • The V11 deck doesn’t require AnkiHub, but you’ll need AnkiWeb to sync between devices
  • The AnKing V11 deck is quite large, so syncing might take some time, especially the first time

Would you like me to explain any of these steps in more detail?

They took the V11 version down, i cannot access it and they mention this version is outdated

I need to search for the most up-to-date information on accessing the AnKing V11 deck since it appears the link may no longer be active.

Hi saradt,

I understand your frustration about the V11 version being unavailable. It appears that the AnKing team has indeed taken down the older V11 version as it became outdated.

Your Options at This Point

  1. Try a More Recent Anki Version: Since the AnKing Step Deck is now primarily available through AnkiHub, your best option would be to try installing a newer version of Anki that might still work with macOS Catalina. You could try:

    • Anki 2.1.54 or 2.1.60 from the archive page
    • These versions might still work with Catalina while also supporting the AnkiHub add-on
  2. Focus on AnkiMobile: Since you mentioned you have AnkiMobile on your iPad, you could:

    • Create a fresh AnkiWeb account if you’re having sync issues
    • Subscribe to AnkiHub directly through AnkiMobile
    • Access the deck through your iPad instead of your Mac
  3. Contact AnKing Support Directly: For access to older versions or specific compatibility issues, you may want to:

    • Email the AnKing team directly at team@ankingmed.com
    • Explain your specific situation with macOS Catalina
    • They might be able to provide a special download link or alternative solution

Troubleshooting AnkiMobile Sync

If you’re still having issues with syncing on your iPad:

  • Make sure you’ve confirmed your email on ankiweb.net
  • Try creating a new AnkiWeb account if you continue having issues
  • Check that you’re connected to a stable internet connection

Would you like me to help you explore any of these options in more detail? The AnKiHub team is dedicated to helping users access their materials, so a direct email might be your best path forward given the specific constraints of your macOS version.

should i be able to see the anking step deck on ankiweb after subscribing to it on ankihub?

I’ll search for information about viewing AnkiHub decks on AnkiWeb to help answer this question.

Reading: 🤝 Subscribing to a Deck

Hi saradt,

No, you won’t be able to see the AnKing Step deck on AnkiWeb after subscribing to it on AnkiHub. These are two separate systems that work differently:

AnkiHub vs. AnkiWeb Explained

AnkiWeb is Anki’s built-in synchronization service that allows you to sync your cards between devices. It doesn’t host decks for subscription - it simply syncs what’s already in your Anki desktop.

AnkiHub is a separate service for collaborative decks like the AnKing Step deck. You subscribe to decks on AnkiHub, but to actually get them into your Anki, you need to:

  1. Subscribe on the AnkiHub website
  2. Have the AnkiHub add-on installed in Anki desktop
  3. Sync Anki to download the deck

How to Get the Deck Working

Since you’re facing compatibility issues with your older Mac, you have a few options:

  1. Try the mobile route:

    • Unfortunately, AnkiMobile alone can’t directly access AnkiHub subscriptions
    • You need a compatible desktop version first to act as the “bridge”
  2. Consider a newer Mac: If possible, using a computer with a newer macOS would be the simplest solution

  3. Contact AnKing support directly: Email team@ankingmed.com explaining your situation with macOS Catalina - they might have alternative solutions for users with older systems

Next Steps

If you’ve already paid for an AnkiHub subscription but can’t access the content due to compatibility issues, I’d recommend contacting AnkiHub support directly at support@ankihub.net to explain your situation. They may be able to help with:

  1. A temporary refund until you can access a compatible system
  2. A special download link for older systems
  3. Other alternative solutions

I understand this is frustrating, but the AnkiHub team is generally very responsive to helping users with special circumstances.

Hi,

I’m not entirely sure if this is possible, as the AnkiHub add-on and website are regularly updated to stay compatible with the latest versions of Anki. I’m not aware of any guaranteed workarounds for this.

To be certain, I’ll tag one of our developers who can give you a definitive answer.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Does the AnkiHub > :key: Sign into AnkiHub option work for you after installing the add-on (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1322529746)?
