This usually happens when either:
- the AnkiHub add-on isnât installed / activated correctly, or
- AnkiHub is trying to protect your deck from being overwritten during sync.
Here are the main things to check, in order:
1. Confirm the AnkiHub add-on is installed and enabled
In Anki (on your computer):
- Go to
Tools â Add-ons. - Make sure the AnkiHub add-on is listed and enabled (checkbox on).
- If itâs missing, install it via:
Tools â Add-ons â Get Add-onsâŚ- Paste the AnkiHub add-on code from the AnkiWeb page (on AnkiHubâs website, they link it).
- Restart Anki.
2. Log into AnkiHub add-on in Anki
- In Anki, after restart, open
Tools â AnkiHub. - Log in using the same AnkiHub account you used on the website (the one with the active subscription).
- Once logged in, click âSync with AnkiHubâ from the AnkiHub menu (not the normal cloud sync button) and see if you still get the block message.
If you can, copy the exact error text or a screenshot and share it in the topicâthat helps narrow down the cause.
3. Make sure you joined the correct deck & created it in Anki
On the AnkiHub website:
- Open the Step 1 deck page and confirm it says âSubscribedâ.
- Back in Anki, make sure you have downloaded/created the deck using the AnkiHub add-on:
Tools â AnkiHub â Manage Decks- Find the Step 1 deck and click something like âDownload/Link deckâ (wording may vary slightly).
- Let it finish downloading before syncing.
If you manually imported a different copy of the Step 1 deck first, AnkiHub may block syncing to prevent conflicts. In that case, tell me:
- Did you ever import a Step 1 deck
.apkgbefore installing AnkiHub?
4. Check AnkiWeb vs AnkiHub sync buttons
- Blue sync button (top right) = AnkiWeb (built-in Anki sync).
- AnkiHub menu â Sync with AnkiHub = syncs shared decks with AnkiHub.
AnkiHub doesnât replace AnkiWeb sync; you typically use both:
- Sync with AnkiHub to update shared decks.
- Sync with AnkiWeb to back up all data / share across your own devices.
If youâre only clicking one of them, describe which one youâre using when you see âblockedâ.
5. If nothing works, please share details
Reply in your topic with:
- The exact wording of the error message AnkiHub shows when it âblocksâ the sync.
- A screenshot of:
Tools â Add-onswindow (showing AnkiHub), and- The sync error popup (if possible).
- Your Anki version (from
Help â About).
With that information, I can give you very specific next steps.
Hello,
I would be happy to help. ![]()
Can you share a bit more detail about the specific difficulties youâre running into? When you say AnkiHub âblocks the syncâ
The more context you can share the easier it may be to be of help. Screenshots are ideal, if you can, just so I can see what youâre seeing
Your bot does not work
The botâs response does seem to cover some of the common basics that are often helpful to double-check.
But, if you can share a bit more information Iâd be happy to help further
i took some screenshots but dont see where/how to upload them
I have spent more than two hours on this already. Claude was not able to help me.
Gotcha, those screenshots are helpful thank you. ![]()
First, you may want to make sure that youâre on the most recent version of Anki:
If you can, within Anki go to your top menu bar. From there, click Anki - About Anki and check your version number.
Youâll want to make sure that youâre on 25.09 (or higher). If itâs any other version, youâll want to upgrade since older versions often run into little issues with add-ons.
You can always download the latest version of Anki at the official Anki website: https://apps.ankiweb.net/
Once youâve ensure that is the case, give this a shot:
It seems to be trying to sync with ankiweb
Yep, go ahead and click âsĂâ there and see about what comes for you then. ![]()
so i was able to get to installâŚit took forever and it wasnt clear if it downloaded everything becasue it is still telling me to install. i tried to open the deck and no cards appear and it says to see the wiki guide
Have you had a chance to look at the wiki guide?
It is at least somewhat likely that the cards are suspended (which is normal) and the guide can walk you through how to get started
This tutorial may also help: How to Get Started Studying
si user unfriendly. i have lost hours of study time trying to access these cards
i am trying to open browse and the circle just keeps turning and turningâŚâŚso slow
The circle turning is a good sign, and normal. ![]()
That means that things are being synced to your local collection. Given that youâre installing a new, and rather large, deck this initial sync can take a while. This is a normal and good sign
