Cards randomly getting suspended

Some of my anking cards are getting randomly suspended, when I know I DID NOT suspend them on my own. what is going on? is there any way to prevent this?

There are a few common reasons AnKing/AnkiHub cards can appear to be “randomly” suspended, even if you didn’t manually suspend them:

1. Leech settings in Anki

Anki can auto‑suspend cards that you repeatedly fail (called leeches).

  • Go to Deck options → Lapses tab
  • Check:
    • Leech threshold (default is 8)
    • Leech action – if it’s set to Suspend card, Anki will automatically suspend it once it hits that number of lapses.

If this is what’s happening, the card will also get a leech tag.

How to prevent it:
Change Leech action to Tag only instead of suspend, or increase the threshold if you prefer.

2. AnkiHub / AnKing updates suspending cards

Some shared decks (like AnKing/AnkiHub decks) may have cards intentionally suspended by the deck maintainers (for errors, duplicates, outdated content, etc.). When you sync with AnkiHub or import an update, those suspension states can be applied to your deck.

If:

  • You see cards that used to be active suddenly suspended after an AnkiHub sync / update,
then it’s likely coming from the shared deck changes.

How to reduce this:

  • In the AnkiHub add‑on, check your sync settings for whether you’re:
    • Applying suspension state from AnkiHub to your local deck.
  • If you’d like to investigate:
    • Pick one example card
    • Check:
      • Its note ID
      • Its tags
      • When it was last modified (Browser → right‑click columns → enable “Modified”)

You can then share this info in a follow‑up post so we can narrow down whether it’s due to leeches vs. AnkiHub sync behavior.

3. To help you better

Please reply with:

  1. A screenshot of the Deck options → Lapses tab for your AnKing deck.
  2. Whether you’re using the AnkiHub add‑on and syncing this deck with AnkiHub.
  3. One specific card that was “randomly” suspended:
    • What tags does it have?
    • Does it have a leech tag?

With that info, we can tell you exactly what’s going on and how to stop it.

how to access those sync settings and look at suspension state?

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

It might be helpful if you can share a bit more context. As a general rule, neither Anki nor AnkiHub has a way to suspend cards, really.

That being said, what may potentially be the case is that you may have one of the ‘sibling burial’ options toggled in your deck settings, as so:

That would be the first, and likeliest, thing that I might check, either if it’s the case or at least to rule it out, and then we can go from there. :mending_heart:

its not burying bc my buried cards have a different color from my suspended cards. How do I access that suspension state from AnkiHub? I think when cards are getting updated they are getting suspended automatically.

Can you share a screenshot, by chance? It may be easier to help if I can see what you’re seeing

It’s unlikely, though we can help to try to rule it out for you. :mending_heart:

You mentioned that your suspended cards have a color, yeah? That is how you access the ‘suspended state’; if from the Browse screen the cards are highlighted in yellow they are suspended. If they are not highlighted in yellow then they are not suspended. As so:

From there, in most cases AnkiHub doesn’t confer a ‘suspended state’ onto cards. In rare cases if you install a new deck some cards may start out suspended, but this is not terribly common and to the best of my knowledge AnkiHub does not have a way to suspend cards already active in your collection.

The more context you can share the easier it may be to be of help. Screenshots are ideal, if you can, just so I can see what you’re seeing

I already unsuspended those cards. but yes they show up yellow, while my buried cards pop up as dark orange. I fixed it all now, but let me see in a couple days/weeks if random cards end up getting suspended. I even checked my leech settings and that is set to tag only (not suspend).
