Doesn't download updates for AnKing Step Deck

When I try to sync, it says downloading updates for AnKing step deck: 0

And then proceeds to close the window without ever actually updating anything.

Additional information:

This is my first time syncing after around 6 months of inactivity. Also, I am on scholarship which I applied and got approved today.

Edit: Fixed

A few things to check/try, in order:

  1. Confirm you’re actually subscribed to the AnKing Step Deck on AnkiHub

    • Go to: https://ankihub.net/decks
    • Make sure:
      • You see AnKing Step Deck listed under My Decks.
      • Your scholarship shows as active on the account you’re logged into (same email you use in Anki).
  2. Check the deck link & tags in Anki

    • In Anki, open AnkiHub → Manage Decks.
    • Confirm that:
      • The AnKing Step Deck is listed there.
      • Status is Linked (not “Not linked” or error).
    • In the Browser, select a few cards from that deck and look for an AnkiHub-related tag (e.g. AnkiHub::…).
      • If there’s no AnkiHub tag, it may not be correctly linked to the shared deck you subscribed to.
  3. Force a refresh of AnkiHub data

    • In Anki:
      • Go to AnkiHub → Log out.
      • Then AnkiHub → Log in again and make sure you use the same account that has the scholarship.
    • After logging in, go to AnkiHub → Manage Decks, select the Step deck, and click Check for updates (or similar wording, depending on your version).
  4. Check if there are actually updates

    • Sometimes “Downloading updates: 0” just means there are no new changes for your local version.
    • If you haven’t updated for ~6 months, there should usually be something, but:
      • If your local deck isn’t recognized as the AnkiHub-linked version (e.g., it was imported from a separate .apkg), AnkiHub may see it as separate and thus download “0” changes.
  5. Try re-linking the deck
If the deck is not properly linked:

    • Back up your collection (File → Create Backup).
    • In AnkiHub → Manage Decks, unlink the Step deck if it appears with errors.
    • Subscribe again to the AnKing Step Deck on the AnkiHub website.
    • Back in Anki, AnkiHub → Sync and follow the prompts to link your existing deck (if it offers that) or to download the AnkiHub version and then move your reviews over.
  6. Share some screenshots / details
Since this is your first sync in months and you just got scholarship, it would help if you could reply with:

    • A screenshot of AnkiHub → Manage Decks showing the Step deck.
    • The exact text from the AnkiHub sync log (bottom of the sync window, if any).
    • Whether you ever updated this Step deck via AnkiHub before, or only via importing .apkg files.

If you post those details, I can help narrow down whether this is:

  • A linking/mismatch issue with your local deck,
  • A login / scholarship account mismatch,
  • Or truly a case of no new updates being available.

Doesn’t work

Thanks for the quick follow‑up. Since “Doesn’t work” could be a few different things, let’s narrow it down with some very specific checks. Please go through these in order and let me know exactly at which step things don’t match what I describe.

1. Confirm subscription + scholarship on the web

On AnkiHub website:

  1. Go to https://ankihub.net/decks (make sure you’re logged in).
  2. Confirm:
    • You see “AnKing Step Deck” under My Decks.
    • Your scholarship is active on this same account (same email as Anki).

:backhand_index_pointing_right: If you don’t see the Step Deck under My Decks, click into it from the deck list and hit Subscribe, then try syncing again in Anki.

2. Check that the deck is actually linked in Anki

In Anki (desktop):

  1. Go to AnkiHub → Manage Decks.
  2. Look for AnKing Step Deck and tell me:
    • Is it listed there?
    • What does the Status column say? (e.g. Linked, Not linked, Error, Missing permission, etc.)

If it’s not listed at all:

  • That usually means your local Step deck isn’t connected to AnkiHub yet.

If it shows something like Missing permission / Not subscribed:

  • That points to an account / scholarship / subscription issue.

3. Confirm AnkiHub tags exist on the cards

In Browser:

  1. Select a card from your AnKing Step Deck.
  2. On the right side, look at the Tags field.
  3. Do you see any tag that starts with something like AnkiHub::?
  • If yes: the deck is (or was) linked to AnkiHub.
  • If no AnkiHub tag: it might be an offline / .apkg version that isn’t actually tied to the online Step deck.

4. Force re‑authentication and manual update

Still in Anki (desktop):

  1. Go to AnkiHub → Log out.
  2. Then AnkiHub → Log in and make sure you use the same email as on the website (where your scholarship shows).
  3. Go back to AnkiHub → Manage Decks:
    • Select AnKing Step Deck.
    • Click Check for updates or Sync deck (wording depends on your version).
    • Watch the sync window and let me know:
      • Does it still say Downloading updates: 0 and close?
      • Is there any error text in the lower part of that window?

If you can, copy any text from the sync log or attach a screenshot of:

  • The Manage Decks window (showing the Step deck row), and
  • The sync window right before it closes.

5. If it’s still stuck: safe re‑link attempt

If the deck appears in Manage Decks but won’t pull updates:

  1. Create a backup first:
    • Anki → File → Create Backup.
  2. In AnkiHub → Manage Decks:
    • If the Step deck shows as linked but broken, try Unlink (or similar option).
  3. On the AnkiHub website, make sure you’re subscribed to the AnKing Step Deck.
  4. Back in Anki, go to AnkiHub → Sync:
    • It should offer to link to an existing deck or download a fresh copy.
    • Choose to link to your current Step deck if that option is offered.

What I need from you next

Please reply with:

  1. Screenshot or description of AnkiHub → Manage Decks row for the AnKing Step Deck (especially the Status).
  2. Whether you see AnkiHub::... tags on cards from that deck.
  3. Confirmation that:
    • The Step deck appears under My Decks on https://ankihub.net/decks.
    • You’re logged into the same email in Anki and on AnkiHub.

With those 3 pieces of info, I can tell whether this is:

  • A permissions/scholarship account mismatch,
  • A deck not actually linked to AnkiHub,
  • Or an AnkiHub sync bug we should escalate.

Hello,

It could be that the deck is already updated. If you re-subscribe after six months, the first time you open Anki after re-subscribing, it’s highly likely that it has already updated. When you click to sync with AnkiHub again, there will be nothing left to update.

Please follow this tutorial to reset local changes. This will ensure your deck is up to date: How to Reset Local Changes

Then, please let me know what you find that indicates your deck is out of date.
