Hello! I was using an old version of the Anki app with the AnKing v11 deck, a couple days ago I updated the app to the latest version and subscribed to the v12 deck. But now as I was going through some cards the images are gone, there is only a blue box with a question mark, and at the bottom I get the error message attached in the picture below. How can I fix it?

This usually happens when:
- You have the v12 note types/templates but
- The media for those fields wasnât fully downloaded (or is still the old v11 media).
The blue box with a question mark and the âAn image is missing: <randomâlooking .webp file>â message means Anki canât find that file in your collectionâs media folder.
Try these steps in order:
1. Make sure v12 is fully downloaded from AnkiHub
On desktop Anki (not mobile):
- Update to the latest stable Anki version (2.1.65+ recommended).
- Make sure you have the AnkiHub addâon updated (Tools â Add-ons â Check for Updates).
- Go to AnkiHub â Manage Subscriptions â AnKing v12 and click:
- âDownload deckâ if you havenât yet, or
- âUpdate nowâ if you see that instead.
- Let it finish completely (this can take a while if media is large).
Then Sync, and on your phone tap the sync button and let it pull everything.
2. Force a media resync
On desktop:
- Sync first so everything is up to date.
- Go to Tools â Check Media.
- If it says files are missing, click âCheck databaseâ and then sync again.
- Optionally, do Tools â Preferences â Network â âOn next sync, force full uploadâ, sync, then on your phone choose âDownload from AnkiWebâ to get a clean copy including media.
3. Confirm the issue isnât old v11 cards
Some older v11 cards may point to old image names that donât exist in v12.
- Open one of the problem cards on desktop â Cards⌠and see if the image field references a file name that isnât present under Tools â Check Media.
- If the card is from an old v11 deck copy, consider:
- Suspending/deleting that old deck copy, and
- Using only the AnkiHubâsynced v12 deck.
If you can, please add a reply with:
- Whether youâre using Anki desktop (Windows/Mac) and iOS or Android.
- A screenshot of Tools â Check Media results from desktop.
With that info we can narrow down whether itâs an incomplete v12 download, a sync issue, or leftover v11 media references.
Hello,
Does this happen only on mobile? Here is what is probably happening:
- You first download the deck on your computer through AnkiHub. Images can take some time to download depending on your internet connection.
- If you want to use the deck on other devices, you must sync with your Anki/AnkiWeb account to upload them to AnkiWeb. This part can take a long time; if you donât wait for Anki to finish syncing everything, you wonât see the images on mobile.
- On your mobile device, you then sync with your Anki/AnkiWeb account to download everything. This is another step that can take a while.
Please check if the images appear on your computer first. If they do, click Sync and wait until the process is completely finished. Then, click Sync on your mobile device and wait for that to finish as well. Images can take a long time to sync the first time because there are so many of them.
The images do appear on my computer I just checked. I had synced everything supposedly the first time. But now I pressed the syncrhonize botton on my phone again and it has been loading from a while like in the picture, I will give it sometime and hopefully theyâll all fully sync thank you!
