You’re seeing Anki’s Check Media report, which means the cards are pointing to files that aren’t currently in your media folder. Here’s how to fix this for the AnKing Overhaul with AnkiHub:

1. Make sure all devices are fully synced

  1. On your main computer:
    • Sync Anki (blue sync button) until it says “Synchronization complete.”
    • Then go to Tools → Check Media again and confirm the “Missing” count hasn’t changed.
  2. If you use other devices (laptop/phone/tablet), sync them too so everything is up to date.

This ensures the problem isn’t just that the media is on another device/AnkiWeb but not yet downloaded.

2. Re‑download media from AnkiHub (common fix)

Since you’re using the AnKing Overhaul through AnkiHub, the quickest fix is usually to re‑download the shared media from the AnkiHub deck page:

  1. In Anki Desktop, open the AnkiHub add‑on (AnkiHub → Manage Subscriptions).
  2. Locate your AnKing Overhaul subscription.
  3. Look for an option like:
    • “Redownload all media”, “Force media sync”, or similar (wording can change with updates).
  4. Run that and let it finish (this may take a while; don’t close Anki while it downloads).

If you don’t see an explicit “redownload media” option, please reply with:

  • A screenshot of your AnkiHub → Subscriptions window for the AnKing deck, or
  • Your AnkiHub client version (Anki → Tools → Add‑ons → AnkiHub → View Files / Config shows the version).

I can then give you button‑by‑button steps based on your exact UI.

3. Confirm it’s improved

After the media download finishes:

  1. Go to Tools → Check Media again.
  2. Check whether the “Missing files:” number dropped (ideally to 0, or at least much lower).

If you still have a lot of missing files:

  • Note whether they mostly look like:
    • Anking05782.mp3 / .jpg / etc. (typical deck media), or
    • Your own custom filenames (e.g., screenshots you made yourself).
  • Paste or screenshot the first 10–20 lines of the missing media list here.

That will help determine if:

  • AnkiHub media didn’t download correctly, or
  • You previously deleted/moved your personal media files outside of Anki.

4. Things not to do yet

Until we sort this out, don’t click “Delete Unused” in Check Media. That’s safe in many cases, but if something is mis‑synced, it can complicate recovery.

If you can share:

  • Your OS (Windows/Mac/Linux), and
  • Whether you ever manually moved/cleaned your collection.media folder,

I can give more targeted steps (including where to look for a backup of the media).

in addition looking at the bot’s response, the ankihub drop down in anki desktop does not have a forced media sync or redownload all media option for me

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

Unfortunately, for a number of reasons the ‘check media’ function won’t, on its own, be a reliable indication of actually missing any media. That value will be non-zero for everyone, regardless of whether or not you are missing media

A more reliable indication would be if you have cards that are displaying inappropriately. If that is the case, please share some screenshots and we’d be happy to help troubleshoot further.

Hi, thank you for the response here is an example

Gotcha, thank you for that.

Hello

It could be a few things, but let’s tackle the most likely options roughly in order:

From within Anki, click on the top menu bar: Anki - About Anki. See what your version number is. If it’s anything other than 25.02 (or higher) you’ll want to update: https://apps.ankiweb.net/

Once you’ve done that, if you don’t already have the AnKing Note Types add-on installed, you’ll want to install that to make sure that your note types are fully up to date. From the top menu bar: Tools - Add-ons - Get Add-ons, and insert this code: 952691989.

Once you’re done with that, restart Anki and it should prompt you to update your note types. Go through that, and once you’re done restart Anki one more time.

From there, go to your top menu bar: AnKing - AnKing Note Types, and from the resulting screen make sure that the ‘Update notetypes’ button at the bottom is grayed out. If it’s grayed out, you’re fully updated. If it’s not, click on that to update again (sometimes it takes doing it twice).

Once that’s done, restart Anki once more and then follow this tutorial: Resetting Local Changes

Give those things a shot, and let me know how you fare, and we’ll go from there.

Hello! So I was able to do everything up until Resetting Local Changes.

Once I got there the only option of a deck “Getting Started With Anki” not my Anking Overhaul Deck.

After checking a few cards, photos are still missing.

I believe that’s because you’re not currently subscribed to the AnKing Step deck, on AnkiHub.

Without being subscribed to the deck, you necessarily won’t be able to receive any updates to the deck, including media. Subscribing to the deck should help matters a bit

I see, am I subscribed to an old deck?

Which deck would be best to subscribe to to match the Anking Overhaul for Step 1 & 2?

I apologize I am a bit confused as I still get emailed updates for Anking.

I’m not sure, I can only see that you’re not subscribed to anything other than the ‘Getting Started’ deck, on AnkiHub.

The AnKing Step deck.

this is what it looks like on my end. i am very confused now. thank you for the suggestion! with the new Anking Step deck would my progress on cards be lost since it is a new deck?

Nope, the system is designed to preserve your review progress (otherwise no one would ever upgrade or update). :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

hello! i just subscribed to the new deck! thank you so much for all the help. media is still in the “downloading” phase so hopefully it works and I will update you
