I understand the issue you’re experiencing with your new card count not decreasing. This is actually expected behavior in Anki, and it’s related to how Anki counts cards in different learning stages.
Here’s what’s happening:
When you’re learning new cards in Anki, the blue number (showing 35 in your screenshot) represents the number of new cards that you haven’t seen yet. This count only decreases when a card moves out of the “new” status.
- If you answer “Easy” on the first try, the card immediately graduates to a review card, so it’s no longer counted as new
- If you answer “Good” or “Hard,” the card enters the learning phase and will reappear after the set interval (looks like 15 minutes in your case)
- When the card reappears after 15 minutes, it’s already in the learning phase (not new anymore), so answering “Easy” at this point won’t affect the new card count
This is standard Anki behavior - the new card count only decreases when you see a completely new card for the first time, not when you review cards that are in the learning phase.
The three numbers you see at the bottom of your screen represent:
- New cards (blue): Cards you haven’t seen yet
- Learning cards (orange): Cards in the learning phase
- Review cards (green): Cards that have graduated from learning
If you want to learn more about how card counting works in Anki, I recommend checking out the Anki manual sections on studying and card states.
Is there anything specific about this behavior you’d like me to clarify further?
