After syncing with AnkiHub, it appears my personal tag for questions I got wrong has been deleted. How do I recover?

When you sync with AnkiHub, it can sometimes override local changes, including personal tags you’ve added. This is especially true if you’re using tags directly on cards that are managed by AnkiHub.

How to recover your tag

There are two main approaches to solve this:

Option 1: Reset local changes (if you want to restore from a backup)

If you have a recent backup or know the cards were recently tagged:

  1. Go to Browse in Anki
  2. In the menu bar, click on AnkiHub
  3. Select Reset all local changes
  4. Choose the deck you want to reset

Option 2: Use Optional Tag Groups (recommended for the future)

  2. Tag your cards using the structure: AnkiHub_Optional::YourGroupName::WrongQuestions
  3. These tags are kept separate from the main deck tags and won’t be affected by syncs

If you haven’t protected a given tag, it is likely to be overwritten by AnkiHub.

You can likely recover your tags by restoring from a backup: How to Restore From Backup

Once you’ve done that, in order to prevent the same thing from likely recurring, you may want to protect those tags: How to Protect Personal Tags from being Overwritten
