Can you try the same process again while ignoring the update prompt?
Now every time I try to open and close anki it takes a really long time to try to sync and then says “oh no an error occured.”
Please advise as now my anki is not working.

This is a distinct issue, as there is currently a bug with the Ankihub servers. Which is, necessarily, affecting a number of users (myself included).
The developers aware and currently working on a fix.
