I just started using AnkiHub to subscribe to the MCAT deck. After importing, in addition to the main tags under #AK_MCAT_v2, I see a list of other tags (e.g., AnkiHub_ImageReady or !AK_UpdateTags). There are even two or so cards untagged entirely.
What are these tags, and why do they appear?
Iāll help you understand those additional tags youāre seeing after subscribing to the MCAT deck through AnkiHub. Let me search for relevant information to provide you with a clear explanation.

Understanding AnkiHub Special Tags
Thanks for your question about the additional tags that appear after importing the MCAT deck via AnkiHub! Those special tags youāre seeing serve specific purposes within the AnkiHub system. Let me explain the main ones:
Special AnkiHub Tags
-
AnkiHub_ImageReady: This tag indicates cards that have been processed for image support on AnkiHub. The AnKing team has been working on replacing copyrighted images with public domain images or custom-created ones that are properly licensed for distribution.
-
!AK_UpdateTags: These are maintenance tags used by the AnKing team to track cards that need updates or have been updated. For example, !AK_Updatetags::NeedsImageReplacement
would mark cards that need better image replacements.
-
AnkiHub_Protect tags: These are special tags that protect specific fields from being overwritten during updates. For example:
AnkiHub_Protect::Front
protects only the Front field
AnkiHub_Protect::All
protects all fields on a note
Why Some Cards Are Untagged
There might be a few cards without tags due to:
- New additions that havenāt been fully categorized yet
- Cards that were specifically designed to be outside the main tagging structure
- Potential synchronization issues during import
Managing These Tags
Generally, you should:
- Leave these special tags alone unless you understand their purpose
- Donāt delete maintenance tags as they help the deck creators track and improve content
- If you want to hide them from view, you can use the hierarchical tags add-on to collapse them
If youāre concerned about specific cards being untagged, you could report this in the AnkiHub community as a potential suggestion for improvement.
Would you like more specific information about any of these tags or how to manage them in your study workflow?
Hello,
I would be happy to help.
Those tags are mostly there for deck maintainers and illustrators, to be able to coordinate updates, edits, new illustrations, and the general work and improvements that go into the maintaining and improving the deck.
In order to study you donāt need to use them, and they can be safely ignored for the most part. Please let me know if that answers your question, and if thereās anything else I can help with.
Thanks for clarifying! I saw something about the āHierarchical Tagsā add-on can help condense them. This wouldnāt affect sync in any way, right?
Also, this is the details for the untagged note:
AnkiHub ID: f2c0bf77-6127-41a0-b519-c79004361e97
Anki ID: 1735067970516
I donāt know what tags this would match, but I think it would be helpful to tag this to the appropriate Kaplan/KA sections to fit in with the rest of the deck.
Thanks!
It shouldnāt affect your sync, though I donāt know if it will allow those tags to be permanently moved. I believe AnkiHub may reinstate them back to their original position, but you can always give it a shot
Once you start mixing-and-matching add-ons itās hard to make any guarantees, unfortunately
Yep, itās a known quantity. Unfortunately, it comes from a Section Bank question and isnāt otherwise directly referenced in any primary materials so thereās not much to tag it by at the moment.
If you find anything for which it can be tagged, though, feel free to suggest that those tags be added via the āSuggest a changeā feature within Anki.

Let me know if thereās anything else I can help you with.
Oh, I see. Perhaps there could be a new section #SectionBanks for notes that come from these resources specifically? I imagine there could be other notes in the future added as well that neatly fall under this.
I would use the āSuggest a Changeā feature, but it wasnāt going through without me actually creating the tag section (and Iām a little new so wasnāt sure how to do this lol).
In theory, maybe. But, weād have to have folks willing to go through and tag (most tagging is a communal effort). Thus far, no one has been keen to tag the AAMC materials, for a few reasons
Beyond that, we havenāt had many volunteers to tag, of late, and thereās a lot of additional work that goes into quality controlling of such things. Itās a big project to start tagging anything that large
Case-in-point, we recently finished tagging by UWorld QIDās, and that took many months. Itās not that we wouldnāt love to tag everything under the Sun, just that it can be quite time-consuming work and other projects have been higher priority (UWorld QIDās, UWorld textbooks, AAMC content outline, lots of other updates and work that it takes to maintain the deck).
But, all that being said, if youāre interested in tagging we are always looking for folks to lend a hand.
Lol, all good.
Probably not worth creating a new tag for a single card, tbh. Wouldnāt do much but just sit there, and probably make a lot of folks think theyāre missing cards or tags somehow, in confusion.
Gotcha. That makes sense. I wasnāt sure if there were already existing notes that corresponded to AAMC Section Banks, but if not, I can see why that would be confusing.
For now, I guess this note will just be alone and untagged as is (rip). If I think of any Kaplan/KA sections it may fit though, Iāll use the āSuggest a Changeā feature in case it can be correlated with something.
Thanks for the help!
