Whenever I click show answer, the page just become blank but then the bottom showed the noral "again, hard, good, easy" bar

Whenever I click “Show Answer,” the page becomes blank, but then the bottom shows the normal “again, hard, good, easy” bar. I have to Control+Z to undo the card and click “Show Answer” again for the information on the card to show up. It’s been very annoying, and I’m trying to get some help. It has significantly slowed down my daily progress since I have to do this on almost every other card. I did try to Google the problem; some said it was due to the graphics driver of the computer, but I couldn’t find any solution regarding this issue.

I’ll help you with this issue where your Anki cards are showing a blank screen after clicking “Show Answer”. This is a frustrating problem that can definitely slow down your studying. Let me search for some relevant information to help resolve this.

Hello gl3715,

I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing this frustrating issue with blank screens after clicking “Show Answer.” This problem can significantly slow down your studies, but we can try a few troubleshooting steps to resolve it.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Restart Anki

First, please try closing Anki completely and restarting it. Sometimes this simple step can resolve temporary glitches.

2. Check for Add-on Issues

Add-ons are often the cause of display problems:

  • Close Anki
  • Restart while holding down the Shift key (this disables all add-ons)
  • Test if the problem still occurs

If the problem disappears when add-ons are disabled, you’ll need to identify which add-on is causing the issue:

  • Disable half your add-ons
  • Test again
  • Continue narrowing down until you find the problematic add-on
  • Report the issue to that add-on’s developer

3. Update Anki

Make sure you’re using the latest version of Anki from the official website (https://apps.ankiweb.net). Older versions may have bugs that have been fixed in updates.

4. Graphics Driver Issue

As you found in your research, this could indeed be related to your graphics drivers:

  • Try updating your graphics drivers to the latest version
  • Alternatively, you can try using Anki’s Hardware Acceleration setting:
    • Go to Tools → Preferences → Basic
    • Try toggling the “Hardware Acceleration” option (turn it off if it’s on, or on if it’s off)

5. Debug Console

If the above steps don’t help, you might try checking for errors:

  • Press Ctrl+Shift+; (Command+Shift+; on Mac) to open the debug console
  • Check if there are any error messages when you encounter the blank screen

Need More Help?

If these steps don’t resolve your issue, please let us know:

  • Which version of Anki are you using?
  • What add-ons do you have installed?
  • What type of computer/operating system are you using?

Remember that keyboard shortcuts like Space or Enter to show the answer, and 1-4 keys for rating cards might help you navigate more efficiently while dealing with this issue.

I’m currently on version 25.09.2. The only add-on I have are review heatmap and FSRS Helper Postpone. My computer is zephyrus G14 with window 11 AMD Ryzen AI 9 CPU chip.

I’ll help you troubleshoot this blank screen issue with your Anki cards. Based on your latest information, we have a better understanding of your setup.

Further Troubleshooting Steps

1. Test Without Specific Add-ons

Since you mentioned you only have two add-ons (Review Heatmap and FSRS Helper Postpone), let’s check if either is causing the issue:

  • Close Anki completely
  • Open Anki while holding the Shift key to start in safe mode (disables all add-ons)
  • Test if the problem persists
  • If the problem disappears, try enabling just one add-on at a time to identify which might be causing the issue

2. Change Video Driver Settings

This is likely a video driver issue, which is common with Anki display problems:

  • Go to Tools → Preferences → Appearance
  • Under “User Interface” section, try changing the “Video driver” setting
  • Test all available options (ANGLE, OpenGL, Software)
  • Restart Anki after each change to see if any of these resolves the issue

3. Check Database Integrity

  • Go to Tools → Check Database to ensure your collection doesn’t have any underlying issues

4. Reset Window Sizes

  • In Preferences → Appearance, click the “Reset Window Sizes” button
  • Restart Anki and test again

5. Update Graphics Drivers

Since you’re using a Zephyrus G14 with AMD Ryzen:

  • Make sure your AMD graphics drivers are up to date
  • You can download the latest drivers from the AMD or ASUS website

6. Alternative Workaround

While trying to fix this issue, you can use keyboard shortcuts to make your workflow more efficient:

  • Use spacebar to show answer
  • Use 1-4 keys to select your answer (Again, Hard, Good, Easy)
  • This might be faster than using Ctrl+Z and clicking again

If none of these solutions work, please consider reporting this as a bug to the Anki development team with specific details about your setup.

Let me know which of these steps you’ve tried and if any of them helped resolve the issue!

for step 1, problem still persist. Then I move on to step 2. I tried all of the video driver options, OpenGL works but it does not allow full screen which I would like to have. Software works but the entire app became very laggy. Vulkan had the same problem as the default. Then I moved on to step 3 and 4, problem still persist after checking database integrity or reset window sizes.

I’ll search for more information about this issue to help you find a solution.

Hello gl3715,

Thank you for trying the troubleshooting steps and providing feedback on what you’ve tried. It sounds like you’ve found that OpenGL works without the blank screen issue, but you’re unable to use full screen with it, which is understandable if that’s your preferred study mode.

Let’s try a few more specific solutions that might help with your Zephyrus G14 running Windows 11:

Additional Troubleshooting Options

1. Modify Anki Configuration File

Some users with similar issues have found success by editing Anki’s configuration file:

  • Close Anki completely
  • Press Windows+R to open Run dialog
  • Type %APPDATA%\Anki2 and press Enter
  • Open the file named prefs21.db with a text editor (like Notepad)
  • Look for settings related to hwAccel or videoDriver
  • If you’re not comfortable editing this file directly, this step might be best skipped

2. Try Compatibility Mode

  • Right-click on the Anki desktop shortcut
  • Select Properties
  • Go to the Compatibility tab
  • Try checking “Run this program in compatibility mode” and select Windows 10
  • Also try checking “Disable fullscreen optimizations”
  • Click Apply and OK, then test Anki again

3. Update Windows

  • Make sure Windows 11 is fully up to date
  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates
  • Install any available updates, especially those related to display or graphics

4. Clean Reinstall

If nothing else works:

  • Uninstall Anki
  • Delete the Anki folder in %APPDATA%\Anki2 (after backing up your collection)
  • Reinstall the latest version of Anki (25.09.2)
  • Restore your collection backup

5. Temporary Compromise

Since you’ve found that OpenGL works but doesn’t allow full screen, you might consider using this as a temporary solution while studying:

  • Use OpenGL driver
  • Maximize the window (but not full screen)
  • Use keyboard shortcuts (spacebar to show answer, 1-4 for rating cards) to make studying more efficient

6. Check Temp Folder Permissions

Sometimes issues with Anki can be related to the temporary folder permissions:

  • Press Windows+R
  • Type %temp% and press Enter
  • Go up one folder and right-click on the temp folder
  • Choose Properties > Security tab
  • Ensure your user account has full control permissions

If you continue to experience this issue, it might be worth reporting it to the Anki development team on their GitHub page, as this appears to be a specific compatibility issue with your hardware/software configuration.

Let me know if any of these suggestions help!

For step 1, I was not able to use notepad to open the file. For step 2, when I try to run compatibility mode, it wouldn’t allow me to, it said I don’t have the proper app to do so. For step 3, I’m sure my window 11 is fully up to date. Step 4, I tried that multiple time before hopping on here and none of reinstallation works.

I’ll help you troubleshoot this frustrating blank screen issue with your Anki cards. Let me search for some more specific solutions that might help in your situation.

Hello gl3715,

I understand this is a frustrating situation, especially since you’ve already tried many of the common troubleshooting steps. Let’s focus on some alternative approaches that might work for your specific hardware configuration with the Zephyrus G14 and AMD Ryzen.

Additional Troubleshooting Options

Try Different Anki Version

Sometimes newer or older versions of Anki handle graphics differently:

  • Consider trying version 24.06 (the previous stable release) to see if the issue exists there
  • Alternatively, you could try the Qt5 version instead of the Qt6 version

Graphics Card Settings

Since you’re using an AMD-based system:

  • Open AMD Radeon Software
  • Go to the Gaming tab or Global Graphics settings
  • Find Anki in your applications list (or add it manually)
  • Try forcing it to use your dedicated graphics card if it’s using integrated graphics
  • Disable any AMD-specific features like Enhanced Sync or Anti-Lag for Anki

Edit Configuration via Add-ons Console

Since you couldn’t access the preferences file directly:

  1. Start Anki
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+; to open the debug console
  3. Try this command to change the graphics driver:
mw.pm.meta["videoDriver"] = "opengl"
mw.pm.save()

Create a Shortcut with Parameters

  • Create a new shortcut to Anki
  • Right-click on it and select Properties
  • In the Target field, add parameters after the path:
    • For using OpenGL: add --graphics=opengl
    • Example: "C:\Program Files\Anki\anki.exe" --graphics=opengl

Workaround Solution

Until a permanent fix is found:

  1. Continue using OpenGL mode which works but doesn’t support full screen
  2. Consider using the keyboard shortcuts exclusively:
    • Spacebar to show answer
    • 1-4 keys for Again/Hard/Good/Easy
    • This will help you avoid clicking the “Show Answer” button that causes the blank screen

Get Support from Anki Team

This seems to be a specific compatibility issue with your hardware configuration:

  • Consider reporting this as a bug on the Anki GitHub Issues page
  • Include details about your hardware, Anki version, and steps to reproduce

If none of these options work, as a very last resort, you might consider trying Anki on a different operating system (like using a virtual machine with Linux) if this is a critical workflow for your studies.

Let me know if any of these suggestions help with your situation!
