Which Field to use for personal notes in Ankihub?

I have been using Anking v12 (without ankihub subscription) for about a year. I now want to upgrade to ankihub to get the latest tags, images, etc. However, I have made many personal notes to thousands of cards. I’ve added my notes are in the “additional resources” field since it always seemed unused. Is this field used in ankihub and if it is does that mean that before purchasing ankihub and syncing, do I need to move my notes from the additional resources field to a different unused one (like “missed questions”)? If I need to move my notes, what is the fastest way to do so?

Or can I simply leave my notes as is, and just protect the additional resources field before syncing? This assumes that additional resources remains empty for all cards?

You’re safe to subscribe to AnkiHub without manually moving all those notes first. Here’s how to handle it cleanly:

1. Does AnkiHub use the Additional Resources field?

For the current AnKing V12 on AnkiHub, the core public fields that get updated most often are things like Text, Extra, Images, etc. “Additional Resources” is not one of the primary frequently-edited fields described in the AnKing Step Deck field wiki, and many users do use it for personal content.

However, AnkiHub can theoretically update any field that’s part of the shared note type. So to be 100% safe, you should assume that “Additional Resources” might receive changes from the shared deck over time.

2. Easiest safe approach: protect your field locally

You do not need to move thousands of notes if you don’t want to.

Instead:

  1. Install the AnkiHub add-on and subscribe to the AnKing deck.
  2. In Anki, open the AnkiHub add-on settings for that deck.
  3. Under Protected Fields, add Additional Resources.
  4. Sync with AnkiHub.

Result:

  • Your “Additional Resources” content stays exactly as-is on your computer.
  • AnkiHub updates to that field will be ignored on your side.
  • Other fields (tags, images, Text, Extra, etc.) can still update normally.

This works even if “Additional Resources” is completely empty on the shared AnkiHub version; your local data will simply be preserved and won’t be overwritten.

3. If you do want to move to another field (optional)

Only do this if you’d rather keep “Additional Resources” free for future community use:

  1. In the Browser, search for the AnKing note type.
  2. Select all notes, then:
    • Right‑click the Additional Resources column → Edit Field won’t move data, so instead:
    • Use Edit → Find and Replace:
      • In field: Additional Resources
      • Find: regex:(.*)
      • Replace: \1
      • But set the destination field to something like Missed Questions using the “Into field” option (if you use an add-on like “Advanced Find and Replace”).
    • Alternatively, export/import with a CSV and map fields, but that’s more work.
  3. Then protect that new field instead (e.g. Missed Questions) in the AnkiHub settings.

Given your use case, the simplest and fastest is:

Leave your notes in Additional Resources and protect that field in AnkiHub before syncing.

If you share a screenshot of your current AnKing note type (field list), I can confirm exactly which field name to protect.

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

The recommended field to use for personal notes would be the ‘Personal Notes’ field, conveniently enough.

That field is sometimes used by AnkiHub, yeah. You have a couple of options available to you:

  • The additional resources field should be protected by default, which means anything you have there will stay there.
  • You can always move stuff out of that field if you prefer, for whatever reasons.

You have the right idea, yeah. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.
