Brand new member can't sync Anking v12 Step deck

The situation:

a fresh instal of Anki on Windows desktop, set up using AnKing Butler script, tested and synced with AnKing “Anki Terminology” deck, new AnkiHub paid account with email receipt, subscribed to AnKing deck on AnkiHub. I have opened and closed Anki, logged out of/into AnkiHub, cleared browser cache, and tried making a new throwaway deck with one throwaway card to force sync. But still, when I sync, Anki Terminology updates and I get a “Collection sync complete” popup, but no Anking Step deck.

You’ve done most of the right setup steps already, so this is almost certainly one of a few common AnkiHub/Step deck issues rather than a general Anki sync problem.

Please check these in order:

1. Confirm AnkiHub add-on is installed and logged in

On the desktop Anki where you’re expecting the Step deck:

  1. Go to Tools → Add-ons and make sure AnkiHub is listed and enabled.
  2. In Anki’s top menu, look for AnkiHub → Settings (or the AnkiHub menu).
  3. Confirm you’re logged in with the same email as your paid AnkiHub account (the one that shows your subscription and Step deck on the web).

If you don’t see the AnkiHub menu at all, the add-on isn’t installed/enabled on that profile, and the deck will never appear there.

2. Make sure you’re actually subscribed to the correct deck

On the web at https://app.ankihub.net:

  1. Go to Decks and open the AnKing Step (v12) deck page.
  2. Ensure the button says “Unsubscribe” (meaning you are already subscribed).
    • If it says “Subscribe”, click it so you’re subscribed.
  3. Stay on that same deck page and look for any “Import into Anki” or “View instructions” link and follow them if present.

3. Force an AnkiHub sync (different from AnkiWeb sync)

The normal blue sync button is for AnkiWeb (your Anki collection), and that part is clearly working (since your Anki Terminology deck syncs).

To pull the Step deck from AnkiHub:

  1. In Anki desktop, go to AnkiHub → Sync (or “Sync with AnkiHub” depending on your version).
  2. Let it finish.
  3. Then, after that, click the regular blue Sync button to upload to AnkiWeb if needed.

If you only press the blue AnkiWeb sync button, no new AnkiHub decks will be downloaded.

4. Make sure you’re in the right Anki profile

If you used the AnKing Butler script, it can create specific profiles. Check:

  • File → Switch Profile
Make sure you’re in the profile where:
    • The AnKing Terminology deck exists.
    • The AnkiHub add-on is installed and logged in.

The Step deck will only appear in the profile that is connected to AnkiHub.

5. Check for error messages

After running AnkiHub → Sync, do you see:

  • Any red error banner at the bottom of the Anki window?
  • Any popup mentioning permissions, subscription, or deck not found?

If yes, please copy that exact message into your reply; it will narrow this down a lot.

If you’re able, reply with:

  • A screenshot of Tools → Add-ons showing AnkiHub,
  • A screenshot of the AnkiHub Decks → AnKing Step (v12) page showing you’re subscribed,
  • And what happens when you run AnkiHub → Sync.

From there I can help you pinpoint the last missing step.

I am having the same exact issue! I think ankihub is down right now.

Good bot; AnkiHub was installed but not enabled

Nice catch on that, and thanks for following up!

If AnkiHub was installed but not enabled, that would definitely explain why the AnKing Step deck wasn’t showing up.

To make sure everything is fully set now (for you and @dcforlenza, since you mentioned you’re seeing the same issue):

1. Keep AnkiHub enabled

In Anki desktop:

  1. Go to Tools → Add-ons.
  2. Select AnkiHub.
  3. Make sure the status at the bottom says Enabled.
    • If you changed anything, restart Anki afterward.

2. Log in + run an AnkiHub sync

  1. In the top menu, go to AnkiHub → Settings and confirm you’re logged in to the same email as your paid AnkiHub account.
  2. Then go to AnkiHub → Sync and let it finish.
  3. After that, click the regular blue sync button (AnkiWeb) to upload the updated collection if you use multiple devices.

You should then see the AnKing Step (v12) deck appear in your deck list.

3. If you still don’t see the Step deck

For either of you, if it’s still missing after doing the above:

  • Go to https://app.ankihub.net/decks and open the AnKing Step (v12) deck.
  • Confirm the button says “Unsubscribe” (meaning you are subscribed).
  • Then return to Anki desktop and run AnkiHub → Sync again and watch for any red error message at the bottom. If one appears, copy/paste it here.

If you’d like, you can also post a screenshot of:

  • Tools → Add-ons showing AnkiHub enabled, and
  • Your Anki deck list after running AnkiHub → Sync

and I can help double‑check that everything is wired correctly.

Try going to add-ons and enabling AnkiHub or otherwise adding the AnkiHub add-on. Fixed mine immediately. AI man…what a trip.

Yeah I have it enabled! But when I click on"sync with ankihub” nothing happens

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

Just to make sure I’m on the same page: you’re a brand new member having difficulty syncing the AnKing Step deck, is that right?

Yes correct

But I had it working once before. So not brand new…

thanks for your help

Sorry, just so I’m on the same page: you are a brand new user, or no?

Can you share a bit more detail about the specific difficulties you’re running into?

The more context you can share the easier it may be to be of help. Screenshots are ideal, if you can, just so I can see what you’re seeing

When I click sync with ankihub, this is the only thing it syncs

I have used Anki once before, very little.

When I click “sync with ankihub”, it gives the message: Ankihub: No new updates.

Gotcha, give this a shot real quick: Resetting Local Changes

Assuming you have an active AnkiHub account and the AnkiHub add-on installed; let me know if that does the trick for you.

Haha WOW I think that worked!

What was causing this issue?

How do I make sure that everything is downloaded properly from ankihub?

You’re now showing 25k+ cards for the Step2 tag, so it looks like everything has downloaded properly from AnkiHub. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

That’s great!!! So at baseline, the step 2 deck has over 25k cards? Got it, thank you.
