Custom cloze deletion cards getting deleted

Hey I am not super ANKI savvy. I am studying the ANKING step 1/2 decks and sometimes I add my own cloze deletions to the cards but once they sync with ankihub, those cloze deletion cards get deleted and I have to replace them. Is there a way to avoid this? thanks in advance

When you add custom cloze deletions to AnKing Step 1/2 deck cards, they’re getting deleted during AnkiHub sync because the main “Text” field (where cloze deletions live) isn’t automatically protected.

Why This Happens

When AnkiHub syncs, it updates cards with the “official” version from the deck maintainers. By default, your custom cloze deletions in the Text field are overwritten during this process.

Solution: Protect Your Edits

There are two main ways to preserve your custom cloze deletions:

Option 1: Protect individual cards with custom clozes

  1. Find the card you modified
  2. Right-click on it
  3. Select “AnkiHub: Protect Fields”
  4. Choose the “Text” field (where cloze deletions are stored)

This will prevent AnkiHub from overwriting your custom clozes on that specific card during syncs.

Option 2: Use personal fields for your notes

The AnKing Step deck has several protected fields by default, including:

  • Lecture Notes
  • Missed Questions
  • Additional Resources

You could add your custom notes and information in these fields instead of modifying the original cloze deletions.

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to protect your new cloze and still have the card receive updates.

You can either follow the bot’s suggestion:

This will prevent the “Text” field for this specific card from being updated.

Alternatively, a more unconventional method is to create a copy of the card with only your new cloze. This duplicate will be a local card in your Anki collection, not an AnkiHub card. This way, you’ll see when the original card gets updated, and you can then manually update your local copy.
