Everytime I open my anki I lose cards under certain tags. I need to redownload tags like 4 times a day in order to actually study what I need. I'm losing my mind lol

Reading: I accidentally deleted tags/cards, how do I recover them?

Hi Kgranitt,

I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing issues with tags disappearing when you open Anki. This can be quite frustrating, especially when you’re trying to study consistently!

Based on your description, it sounds like you might be encountering a sync issue with AnkiHub where your tag organization isn’t being properly maintained between sessions. Fortunately, there’s a straightforward solution for this:

How to recover your missing tags:

  1. Go to Browse in your Anki
  2. In the menu bar at the top, click on AnkiHub
  3. Press Reset all local changes
  4. Select the deck that’s experiencing the tag issues
  5. Click OK

This will restore all your cards and tags to match what’s on the AnkiHub server, which should resolve the issue of disappearing tags.

Some additional troubleshooting steps if the issue persists:

  1. Check for add-on conflicts: Try temporarily disabling other add-ons to see if there’s a conflict
  2. Update AnkiHub: Make sure you’re running the latest version of the AnkiHub add-on
  3. Run Check Database: Use Tools > Check Database to ensure your Anki database is healthy

If you continue to experience issues after trying these steps, please provide more details about:

  • Which specific tags are disappearing
  • What version of Anki you’re using
  • What version of the AnkiHub add-on you’re using
  • Any error messages you might be seeing

Screenshots of the issue would also be helpful for further troubleshooting!

Unfortunately it cannot be a sync issue cause when I sync I actually lose more cards. I have updated and redownloaded several times

Found ⁨1021⁩ new cards with a due number >= 1,000,000 - consider repositioning them in the Browse screen.

Database rebuilt and optimized.

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

Are you losing cards, or losing tags?

Which tags are you losing? For which deck are you tagging cards? Can you help us understand how you’re determining that you’ve lost them?

You mention that it “cannot be a sync issue” though this sounds quite a bit like a sync issue.

If you haven’t already, have you tried protecting those tags?

Can you share a bit more detail about the specific difficulties you’re running into?

The more context you can share the easier it may be to be of help. Screenshots are ideal, if you can, just so I can see what you’re seeing

Sorry I meant it cannot be resolved with syncing. It is a problem with both with the anking tags and my own generated tags for my school specific topics

I can try protecting more tags but I’m also losing cards from the card total - meaning that the total number of anking cards I have changes everytime I check

I’d need a bit more in the way of specifics to be able to help, for better or worse

The more context you can share the easier it may be to be of help. Screenshots are ideal, if you can, just so I can see what you’re seeing

So for example there is supposed to be a couple hundred cards under this tag and there are currently 2

I do see that you’re missing some cards.

I’m not sure I can say with any confidence that you are losing cards, necessarily, so I’m not sure how much I can help with that issue without being able to identify it further, but we can help restore the cards that are not present

You can follow this tutorial to set a corroboration check of your local collection against the server copy: Resetting Local Changes

Give that a shot, let me know how you fare, and we’ll go from there and hopefully we can get you squared away.

I did try that previously, it appears to fix the issue but it resumes the next time I open it

Also I am definitely losing cards as the total card count for my Anking deck goes down. It may not line up where all the cards I’m missing under a tag are missing in the deck, some may just not have that tag. But regardless I am often missing 7k-10k cards from the approximate 36,000 for anking step decks

OK so I redid the local changes and it frankly messed it all up. Under my kidney embryo tag I had 152 cards. I reset local changes, and the card count under the tag went down to 88. I redownloaded the version from before the reset local changes, it had 102 cards. I then redownloaded the tag from my hard drive (I exported the tag and saved it) now I’m back to 152. Except ALLLLLL the other tags I have are also messed up.

It might be easier, for the time being, if we stick to one action at a time. It will necessarily be more difficult to help if we’re making multiple changes in a row

If you can, reset local changes again and share a screenshot of the specific tag you’re referencing so that I have a basis for comparison. Try to hold off on making other adjustments to your collection until we have a chance to take a look at one thing at a time

Secondly, if you can confirm for me the version of Anki that you’re using that may also help us narrow down a few things

Hi Brian, i’m using v12. Respectfully I cannot stick to one action at at time if that action causes me to lose hundreds of cards under my protected tags. If I do something that undoes hours of work I have to fix it immediately, I’m not risking losing hours of separating cards into tags. It took me 2 days to get my cards back to a workable place I’m not doing that again.

Here is the screen shots of when I got all of the cards back and when I got some of the cards back. I don’t have the 88 card screen shot cause I was panic resetting

To clarify this problem has been going on for about 6 days. I just got things back to a place where I can work out where the missing cards are coming from. It took most of the weekend to get things reset to a workable place

v12 is the version of the AnKing deck that you are using, though I’m hoping to confirm the version of Anki that you are using

From your top menu bar: Anki - About Anki - version number

If you can share that version number with me, just to double-check

You can always create, and/or restore, from a backup. No need to fix anything immediately

In this case, it may be causing a bit of additional confusion that will make it more difficult to be of help

That may make it difficult to help troubleshoot, I’m sorry to say

Apologies, though I’m not fully clear on which tag it is that you’ve selected here. It appears to be an in-house deck or tag, potentially?

It would be helpful if you can reset local changes and share a screenshot of an AnKing tag as a basis for comparison. Without that, and if you’ve undergone other actions, it’s pretty difficult to be able to glean much insight or advice as a result

When you sync, are you seeing any pop-up messages? Either from AnkiHub or AnkiWeb?

In particular, anything that asks if you want to ‘upload’ or ‘download’?

Often it tells me that I am missing cards and tosync. WHen I do that I miss more cards

If you don’t mind double-checking your Anki version number, just so we can verify that and rule out any issues there

That’s helpful to know.

It might also be helpful if you can share a screenshot of what you’re seeing that tells you that, so I can see what you see

Do you recall seeing this prompt recently?
