Reading: How are Anki decks related to AnkiHub decks?

Hi Emzen,

It appears you’re experiencing an issue where your new subdeck created under the AnKing deck is getting deleted after syncing. This is likely related to how AnkiHub manages decks.

When you’re subscribed to an AnkiHub deck like AnKing, the add-on maintains specific relationships between your local Anki decks and the AnkiHub subscription. Here’s what might be happening:

  1. Home Deck Configuration: AnkiHub sets a “Home Deck” for each subscription, where new cards from AnkiHub are placed. When you create a subdeck under the AnKing deck and then sync, AnkiHub might be overriding your changes because it controls that deck structure.

  2. Deck Synchronization: AnkiHub has specific behavior when dealing with decks related to its subscriptions. Your custom subdeck may be getting removed during sync because it’s not part of the official AnkiHub deck structure.

How to solve this issue:

Instead of creating a subdeck directly under the AnKing deck, try:

  1. Create a separate deck (not as a subdeck of AnKing)
  2. Configure this new deck as the Home Deck for your AnKing subscription:
    • Go to the AnkiHub menu in the main Anki window
    • Select “Subscribed Decks”
    • Find your AnKing subscription and change its Home Deck to your preferred destination

This way, you can organize cards from AnKing while maintaining the deck structure you want.

Reading: 🙋 Getting Help

Hi Emzen,

This is a known issue with AnkiHub subscriptions, particularly with the AnKing deck. Let me explain what’s happening:

When you’re subscribed to an AnkiHub deck like AnKing, the AnkiHub add-on manages the deck structure, and when you sync, it will reset customizations like subdecks you’ve created under the main AnKing deck.

Why this happens:

AnkiHub needs to maintain control over the deck structure to properly manage updates. When you sync, the add-on is reverting to its default configuration, which doesn’t include your custom subdecks.

Solutions to organize your AnKing content:

  1. Use tags instead of subdecks
The AnKing deck is designed to be organized using tags rather than subdecks. You can use the hierarchical tags in the browser to find and unsuspend specific content.

  2. Create a separate parent deck

    • Create a new parent deck (e.g., “My AnKing Organization”)
    • Create subdecks within this parent (not under AnKing)
    • Move cards from AnKing to these subdecks as needed
    • This structure won’t be affected by AnkiHub syncs
  3. Change the Home Deck setting
If you want new AnkiHub cards to go to a specific deck:

    • Go to AnkiHub menu → Subscribed Decks
    • Find your AnKing subscription
    • Change its Home Deck to your preferred destination

Another user had the exact same issue as you and reported: “When I unsuspend cards it just accumulates in the main Anking deck and if I try create subdecks everytime it logs into ankihub it kind of resets it and deletes my subdecks.”

Remember that moving cards to different decks won’t affect your ability to receive updates - AnkiHub tracks cards by their note IDs, not by deck location.

Hello,

Please try adding at least one card to the subdeck before syncing. That way, the subdeck should stay there.

Let me know if that works for you!
