The JSMBS Phase 1 deck includes cards created for Phase 1 of the MD curriculum at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SUNY Buffalo).

BuffaloMD_AK is an optional shared tag for the AnKing STEP deck (AnkiHub_Optional::BuffaloMD_AK) that maps AnKing cards to our in-house exams.

:woman_and_man_holding_hands:t4: This AnkiHub project is a collaborative effort. Consider contributing notes/cards, tags, edits, corrections, and other supplemental content to improve the quality of our coverage.

JSMBS Phase 1 Deck

JSMBS Phase 1 is a custom shared deck with cards created specifically for in-house lecture content. The parent tag for this deck is #BuffaloMD.

EDIT 10/18/26 MB: Cards are currently 30% hand-written and 70% AI-generated or AI-assisted. All will eventually be hand-reviewed as I (Morgan) make my way through the deck. Please contribute! Suggesting changes helps make this deck better for everyone.

Phase 1 deck navigation

  • Browse by course and exam using the #BuffaloMD::IMC###::Exam# tag set.

  • Browse by content area or subtopic using the #BuffaloMD subtags.

    • #BuffaloMD::IMC530::WhatIs organizes cards by kind: Disease, Drug, Finding, Mechanism, Term.

    • #BuffaloMD::Priority stratifies cards as High Yield (HY) or Relatively High Yield (RHY). Cards are force-tagged HY if they span two or more FA topics.

    • #BuffaloMD::Source encodes the source of a card: primarily lecture notes (#BuffaloMD::Source::Lecture) or scraped from First Aid tables (#BuffaloMD::Source::FATable).

    • Tags can be combined into a search string to filter with more granularity.

  • Browse content from courses other than Foundations using the #BuffaloMD::Y_Other tag set. Cards for these classes can be split into sub-decks if you prefer to review them separately.

  • Protip: Use wildcards around text strings that overlap with multiple tags (e.g. IMC530 vs IMC530-F36; Neoplasms vs Neoplasia) to view responsive cards from multiple decks in one search.

    • tag:*BuffaloMD* picks up cards from both JSMBS Phase 1 and AnKing tagged either #BuffaloMD or AnkiHub_Optional::BuffaloMD_AK
    • tag:*Neoplas* picks up any card from any deck with the string Neoplas anywhere in its tag set.

Filtering by multiple tags at once

Anki’s native search is kinda a pain in the butt, but the syntax isn’t too tricky once you understand how it works.

**To filter down to a single tag using the search bar,** append tag: to the FULL tag name.

Examples:

  • tag:#BuffaloMD::IMC530::WhatIs::Mechanism
  • tag:#BuffaloMD::FirstAid::Pathology::Neoplasia

Native Anki search also supports Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT).

  • AND is implied, so can be omitted. Anki will interpret two tag: strings separated by a space as an AND operation automatically.

  • The following search string will return cards responsive to both tags. Try it now!

    tag:#BuffaloMD::IMC530::WhatIs::Mechanism tag:#BuffaloMD::FirstAid::Pathology::Neoplasia

  • OR searches must be specified. The same string with OR between the tags returns cards responsive to EITHER tag. Try it now!

    tag:#BuffaloMD::IMC530::WhatIs::Mechanism OR tag:#BuffaloMD::FirstAid::Pathology::Neoplasia

Tags

The synced #BuffaloMD tag is maintained primarily by the deck owner/creator and approved deck maintainers (hereafter β€œmoderators”).

However, the #BuffaloMD tag can still be applied to any card in any deck, not just cards from JSMBS Phase 1, and its a good idea to use this to your advantage! If you choose to add custom tags to cards from synced AnkiHub decks (like JSMBS Phase 1 and AnKing), make sure you protect the parent tag in AnkiHub. Your edits may be overwritten when you sync if you skip this step.

:police_car_light: IMPORTANT: Deck subscribers who do not have moderator permissions can make local edits to card tags (including adding #BuffaloMD tags to AnKing STEP and other AnkiHub decks), but these changes will not be pushed to others unless you suggest a change for moderator review and your change is approved. Again – make sure to protect any custom tags added to shared AnkiHub cards from changes so that you don’t lose your edits when AnkiHub syncs.BuffaloMD_AK tag for AnKing

BuffaloMD_AK is an optional shared tag for the AnKing STEP deck (AnkiHub_Optional::BuffaloMD_AK) that maps AnKing cards to our in-house exams.

Sifting through third party decks for cards that apply to in-house content often takes as much time as making them from scratch. Optional tags are the single biggest reason** I** (Morgan) think like it’s worth taking the time to bother with all of this.

If you’re already using the live AnKing deck, tagging cards that cover content emphasized on in-house exams with the shared AnkiHub_Optional::BuffaloMD_AK tag is a great way to help out your classmates without much extra effort on your part.

NOTE: If I am left to my own devices I will add way too many cards to this shared tag. I could definitely use help cutting the number of cards down to the minimum viable set. Subscribe and/or request tag moderator permissions here.
