Unable to suspend cards from Ankihub deck - what am I missing?

Hi all,

I’ve encountered an inconvenient situation that’s brought my studying with Anki to a hault. I’ve scoured the forums but unfortunately have not found a 1-to-1 problem and solution for my case.

In short, when I open the browser from the Anki app on my Windows laptop, I find that I am unable to suspend or unsuspend the cards from the one and only deck I’m subscribed to via Ankihub. Further, once I attempt to suspend even one card and see nothing has happened, I am unable to close the Anki browser window and have to use task manager to close out of the entire app. I’ve attempted the regular troubleshooting stuff including: ensuring I’m in ā€˜card’ view instead of ā€˜notes’ view, turning off the add-ons, restarting my laptop, ensuring I have the most recent version of Anki installed, uninstalling and re-installing the Anki app, unsubscribing then re-subscribing to the Ankihub deck. I’m running out of ideas on what to do and would like to solve ASAP. I’ve been using Anki since 2020 and Ankihub since 2023 so I’ve been navigating Anki pretty comfortably and without issue until this point.

Other details or recent changes:
-I can see the tags, cards, and notes contained within the deck on the browser window, just unable to suspend/unsuspend
-I can still manually suspend cards while in ā€˜study’ mode, so it feels like the issue is associated with the browser window
-I recently unsubscribed from Anking Step 1-3 USMLE decks as I recently finished Step 3

-I am only subscribed and only attempting to use a specialty specific deck from Ankihub
-I recently changed my Ankihub email associated with my username; however I was able to verify the email and login without any hiccups

That’s all the details I can think of for now. Happy to hear any suggestions or solution ideas. Also happy to answer any questions that might clue you into the issue. Thank you so much in advance!

Unable to Suspend Cards from AnkiHub Deck - Troubleshooting

Hi there! I understand how frustrating it can be when Anki’s basic functions like suspending cards stop working, especially when it interrupts your study routine. Based on your description, this appears to be an unusual issue since you’re able to suspend cards in study mode but not in the browser, and the browser freezes when you attempt to suspend cards.

Let me suggest some additional troubleshooting steps that might help:

Potential Solutions to Try

  1. Check Card Protection Settings
Some AnkiHub decks have protected fields and settings that can sometimes affect card behavior. You might want to check if there are any protection settings active for your deck.

  2. Database Check and Optimization
Run a full database check from Tools > Check Database. This can help identify and fix any database corruption issues.

  3. Try Safe Mode with AnkiHub Disabled
Since the issue occurs specifically with your AnkiHub deck, try temporarily disabling the AnkiHub add-on (not just all add-ons) and see if you can suspend cards from your deck then.

  4. Update AnkiHub Add-on
Make sure your AnkiHub add-on is updated to the latest version.

  5. Sync Issues
Try a full sync by selecting ā€œDownload from AnkiWebā€ or ā€œUpload to AnkiWebā€ after backing up your collection.

  6. Export and Re-import the Deck
As a last resort, you could try exporting your deck (without scheduling information) and re-importing it, though this would reset your progress.

When Studying in the Meantime

Since you mentioned you can still suspend cards while in study mode, you might want to use this as a temporary workaround while you resolve the browser issue.

If none of these solutions work, the next step would be to check your Anki logs for any error messages that might provide more specific information about what’s happening when the browser freezes.

Could you also provide information about:

  • Which specific version of Anki you’re using
  • The version of the AnkiHub add-on
  • Which specialty deck you’re having trouble with

This would help narrow down the potential causes of your issue.

I checked the protected fields of the cards: it says these fields are protected: text, extra, personal notes, missed questions, textbook, additional resources, and CA-1. Do any of these stand out as a potential reason why I’m having this problem?

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

At a glance, it sounds like it may be an Anki issue, rather than an AnkiHub issue, but let’s see what we can get done and if we can’t get you squared away.

First thing:

let’s double-check is what version of Anki you’re running. You mentioned being on the latest version, but if you wouldn’t mind double-checking and confirming your version number for me, just to make sure.

If you can, within Anki go to your top menu bar. From there, click Anki - About Anki and check your version number.

You’ll want to make sure that you’re on 25.02. If it’s any other version, you’ll want to upgrade since older versions often run into little issues with add-ons.

You can always download the latest version of Anki at the official Anki website: https://apps.ankiweb.net/

Second from that:

If you can close Anki, then start Anki while holding down the Shift key, which will load Anki in ā€˜Safe Mode.’ Does the issue persist with Anki running in Safe Mode, as well?

Third:

Are you getting any error messages, or pop-ups, ā€˜Anki has crashed’ anything like that?

If you can, give those things a shot and report back, and we’ll go from there.

Protected Fields and Card Suspension Issue

Hi there! Thanks for sharing those details about your protected fields. The issue you’re experiencing with being unable to suspend cards and the browser freezing could indeed be related to your protected fields configuration.

Why Protected Fields Might Be Causing Issues

I notice that you have both text and extra fields protected, which is unusual. According to AnkiHub’s documentation, these fields are typically not protected by default:

We do not protect:

  1. Text
  2. Extra
  3. Sketchy
  4. Pixorize

Having these core fields protected might be causing conflicts when you try to suspend cards from the browser, especially since you mentioned that you can still suspend cards while in study mode.

Suggested Solutions

  1. Modify Your Protected Fields Settings
Try changing your protected fields configuration on the AnkiHub website:

    • Go to your deck’s main page on the AnkiHub website
    • Click the 3 dots in the top right
    • Select ā€œManage protected dataā€
    • Unprotect the text and extra fields (remove the checkmarks)
    • Save your changes and sync
  2. Check for Special Protection Tags
Your cards might have special protection tags like AnkiHub_Protect::All that are preventing normal operations. You can check this by searching for ā€œAnkiHub_Protectā€ in the browser (when it’s working).

  3. Try a Focused Database Check
After changing your protected fields settings, run Tools > Check Database again to ensure everything is properly updated.

Why This Might Work

The browser freezing suggests that there might be conflicts between what you’re trying to do (suspend a card) and what the AnkiHub add-on is programmed to allow with protected fields. By adjusting your protection settings to match the recommended configuration, you may resolve these conflicts.

Let me know if modifying your protected fields settings helps resolve the issue! If not, we can explore other potential solutions.

Thanks for the reply, it’s greatly appreciated! I confirmed I am on version 25.02.07

Attempting to open Anki in safe mode did not appear to resolve the problem. I was still experiencing the same issue and had to use windows task manager to close the app.

No error messages or pop-ups at all!

Hello,

It sounds like you’ve tried almost everything. This is just a shot in the dark, but have you tried changing this setting? You can try switching the video driver between options like OpenGL and Direct3D.

Thanks for the shot in the dark! I tried rotating between all the video drivers but nothing changed

This did not appear to work after ensuring all fields were unprotected. Do you have other troubleshooting suggestions?

Continuing Troubleshooting for Card Suspension Issue

I’m sorry to hear that unprotecting the fields didn’t resolve your issue. Let’s explore some more advanced troubleshooting steps since you’ve already tried the basic ones.

Additional Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Export and Back Up Your Collection
Before trying anything else, export your entire collection as a backup (File > Export > ā€œAll decksā€ with scheduling information).

  2. Try a New User Profile

    • Create a new user profile in Anki (File > Switch Profile > Add)
    • Set up AnkiHub in this new profile
    • Subscribe to the same deck
    • See if the suspension issue persists in the fresh profile
  3. Check Your Temp Folder Permissions
Anki uses your system’s temporary folder, and sometimes permission issues can cause strange behavior:

    • On Windows, press Win+R, type %temp% and hit Enter
    • Go up one folder and locate the temp folder
    • Right-click it, choose Properties
    • In the Security tab, ensure you have full control
  4. Try a Different Browser Action First
Before attempting to suspend cards, try performing a different action in the browser (like adding a tag) to see if that works or also freezes.

  5. Check for Large Media Files
Sometimes large media files in cards can cause the browser to hang:

    • Look for cards with large images or audio files
    • Try testing with a filtered deck containing only text-based cards
  6. Verify Your Anki Installation

    • Uninstall Anki completely
    • Delete the Anki folder in your Documents or AppData folder (after backing up)
    • Reinstall a fresh copy of Anki 25.02
    • Reinstall only the AnkiHub add-on before testing
  7. Try Using Anki on a Different Device
If possible, try using your AnkiWeb account on a different computer to see if the issue is specific to your current machine.

Let me know which of these you’re able to try and if any of them help with your issue. The fact that the browser freezes completely suggests this might be a deeper issue with how Anki is interacting with your system or the specific deck.

Since this issue is related exclusively to Anki and not the AnkiHub add-on, we recommend seeking help on the official Anki forums. This seems to be outside the scope of our support here.

You can post your question at this link: https://forums.ankiweb.net/

Let me know if you need anything else!

Using a new user profile actually solved the problem! Weirdly enough, when I synced AnkiHub and the deck became available on the Anki app, all the cards were automatically unsuspended which I found to be weird. However, once in the browser window, I was able to suspend cards without issue. Thank you for the help!

Great News on Solving Your Card Suspension Issue!

I’m really glad to hear that creating a new user profile solved your problem! This is excellent news and confirms that the issue was likely related to some corruption or conflict in your previous profile settings rather than with the AnkiHub deck itself.

About the Unsuspended Cards

The behavior you noticed where all cards were automatically unsuspended in the new profile is actually normal. When you subscribe to an AnkiHub deck in a new profile, it typically imports with all cards unsuspended by default. This gives you a clean slate to work with.

Moving Forward

Since you’ve identified the solution, here are a few suggestions to keep things running smoothly:

  1. Consider transferring any personal notes or tags from your old profile to the new one if needed.

  2. Keep your AnkiHub add-on updated to ensure compatibility with future Anki updates.

  3. Periodically back up your collection (File > Export) to prevent potential data loss in the future.

  4. If you need to retain your study progress from the old profile, you can look into using the ā€œRescheduleā€ feature for cards you’ve already studied.

It’s great that you can now properly manage your cards in the browser again! This kind of profile-specific issue is relatively uncommon but can happen occasionally with complex software like Anki, especially after long periods of use and updates.

Happy studying with your AnkiHub deck!
